Honouring British Home Child Day by remembering my great-grandfather, Albert Edward Barrett. Orphaned at 6, sent to Canada at 11 to work as a farmhand with wages withheld by Barnardo’s. He died at 31. Canada has acknowledged but not apologized for this history.

It’s that time of year when squashes show up in every kitchen and big pots of soup get simmered, portioned, and tucked away in the freezer for the winter ahead.
A large pot of homemade soup simmering on a stovetop. The broth is orange-yellow, filled with chunks of squash, apple, and herbs like rosemary and thyme. A block of parmesan rind floats near the surface, and kitchen utensils sit nearby on the counter.

HBC was gutted, Future Shop folded both after U.S. buyouts. Roots already closed its U.S. stores (see pic). I really hope it doesn’t go the same way. We’ve lost enough.
Alt text: Screenshot of a text passage stating that on April 29, 2020, Roots Corp. announced the closure of its U.S. stores in Boston, Washington, Chicago, and a pop-up in New York. Two stores in Michigan and Utah would remain open. The subsidiary, Roots USA Corp., would be liquidated through a Chapter 7 bankruptcy, though U.S. customers could still shop online.

Just spotted on r/BuyCanadian: a Bavarian café menu that renamed the Americano to a Canadano. Yes, with a straight line through “Americano.” Honestly? A+ rebrand. Coffee + hot water, but friendlier Big thanks to our European pals for the caffeinated diplomacy
A photo of a café menu in Bavaria showing coffee options and prices. Listed drinks include Espresso, Doppio, Cappuccino, Cafe Latte, French Press, and one item originally labeled “Americano” which has been crossed out and replaced with “Canadano.” Prices are in euros. A note at the bottom mentions the drinks are made with the café’s espresso blend and are also available decaffeinated. The image is from a Reddit post in the r/BuyCanadian subreddit titled “Found in a cafe in bavaria.” The poster explains they’re Canadian living in Bavaria and that their wife found this menu in a small café.

It’s been 24+ hours since the gov’t announced $1.3B for Canadian research, still no coverage from major outlets. Just the gov site, CPAC, and a local blog. But if it were a scandal? Front page by now. Media bias is real and way too American-centric.
Google search under the Videos tab for “Canada research investment.” Top result is a CPAC video titled “Minister Joly on Research Funding” (24 hours ago). Other results include: a Terry Beech Instagram clip (2 weeks ago), Chrystia Freeland’s budget video (April 2024), and a Global News budget highlight.Google search results showing a Canada.ca article: “Government of Canada announces support for over…” dated 1 day ago. His expression is intense and contemplative, set against a dramatic backdrop of stormy skies and crashing waves, creating a powerful, cinematic scene.A joyful group of cosplayers dressed in fantasy costumes walk along a lakeside path under a dramatic sky. Two interesting things I came across today, first a petition for the house of commons to make Canadian made labeling much more clear… www.ourcommons.ca/petitions/en... As well there was a suggestion of what that may look like in a reddit post here www.reddit.com/r/BuyCanadia...
design ideas for canadian made labelling modelled after the australian system. Using a Maple leaf or other easily identifiable canadian symbol, and shading in a portion of the symbol depending on how much is from Canada, for example colouring in half for 50% canadian made.
