I can’t stop marveling over the miracle of this wee meadow in the yard. Two years ago, nothing grew in this spot! I love staring at it and watching the pollinators come and go. 💚🌱🐝 #californianativeplants #nativeplants #grownatives

First Purple Innocence flower! Doesn’t it seem like there’s always one plant willing to be brave and bloom first, even when all the others are still days away? 💜💚🌱💚💜 #californianativeplants #nativeplants #springflowers #plantnatives

This sad little stick is the Western Redbud I planted more than 2 years ago. Gardening is so humbling sometimes! 🙂 Sharing this and other foibles from my CA native plant project in my latest blog post. 💚🌱💚 puttingdownroots.blog/2025/03/16/k... #californianativeplants #nativeplants #gardeningfail

A brown stick poking up out of dead leaves, woodchips, and acorn caps. It has a few small stems branching off, but only two tiny leaves. A green banner has the words “Western Redbud ‘tree’” and a frowny face emoji.

Loving the color on this lupine flower. 🩷 I swear it seems like the plants that sprout out of the cracks in the driveway are healthier than anything I plant and fuss over! 🤦🏼‍♀️😂 🌱 #californianativeplants #nativeplants #wildflowers

Lupine plant with thick stems, many leaves that look like hands with several fingers on each one, and a single flower, mostly bright green and pre-bloomed, but with a few dark pink flower petals starting to unfurl.

Beaver activity! On Sunday, we went on a rainy and chilly birding hike. The birds were few (I hope they were hunkered down somewhere dry and warm), but we got to see beaver dams, a collapsed beaver lodge, recent beaver chew, otter slides, a coyote, and a jackrabbit. Totally worth it! 🥰

Photo of a small creek in Cordelia, California. The foreground shows thick, bushy plants with some green leaves and brown, dormant branches. On the far bank are three bare trees and lots of green and brown grasses. There is evidence of beaver activity where a narrow path has diverted some of the water.

Green grasses in foreground and a pile of wood with visible recent beaver chew marks. In the background is a small, narrow waterfall that the beavers created by damming.

Photo of an active beaver dam with many sticks and branches and piles of mud. The dammed water is cloudy with mud and reflecting the gray winter sky. There are bare trees in the water and on the banks and some green grasses.

I had no idea Anna’s Hummingbirds were such bad asses! For such tiny creatures, they are fiercely protective of their space. Every time I go near one of the plants they like, they buzz my head, chirp loudly, and then follow me around the yard! Maybe there’s a nest nearby? 💚😊
