A Noarlunga paddock hosted the first lacrosse match ever played in South Australia in 1885 — footballers who'd never seen the game kept trying to kick the ball. www.fieldstobarrels.com/posts/noarlu...

Major Thomas O'Halloran arrived in South Australia in 1838 as a retired army officer, became the colony's first police commissioner, and for decades drove the building of a church for settlers in Hurtle Vale, Happy Valley and O'Halloran Hill—despite the government refusing funds. #LocalHistory

Captain Collet Barker sailed the Isabella into the Onkaparinga in April 1831, camping in the horseshoe bend where Noarlunga would rise. A fortnight later he was speared dead at the Murray Mouth — remembered by a cairn on Witton Bluff, above where his story began. #History

Leaving Scotland in 1839 with a letter from Sir James Fergusson, Peter Anderson chose a block beside Second Creek, named it Burnside (giving the suburb its name), later moved to Morphett Vale and named his homestead Archerfield; at his death he owned over 1,100 acres in six properties. #History

Alexander Anderson—publican, brewer, mill-builder and MP—founded #MorphettVale and ran the Emu Hotel for six years. A decade-long feud with the Reynells ended when locals forced him from the magistracy months before his 1862 death. #LocalHistory #SouthAustralia

A block on Aldinga's Old Coach Road passed from the family who founded the township to three generations of blacksmiths — the Pengillys, then John Noah Crisp — who kept the district's horses shod and its coaches built for the best part of a century. #Aldinga #SouthAustralia

In 1858 a young woman smashed a champagne bottle against Clarendon's new timber bridge. The ford it replaced had tested every cart bound south for twenty years. Sixty years later the timber rotted and the ford was pressed back into service before a concrete arch replaced it. #Clarendon #SAHistory

For two decades a flying fox carried buckets of clean white sand over the dunes behind Maslin Beach to a railway siding on the Willunga line, and the Noarlunga Sand Company fed the concrete of a growing Adelaide. #SouthAustralia #Adelaide #LocalHistory #SAHistory
