Two #FETP Intermediate graduates, Raphael Anea and Sypmphorian Sumun, ran an Excel training for provincial program managers and district data officers in West Sepik, PNG. Graduates are passing on what they've learned, building skills that last beyond the program.

Rapid Response Team (RRT) Phase 3 training is now underway in East New Britain Province, PNG, and includes the West New Britain and New Ireland Provincial RRTs. Teams work through an immersive tabletop exercise, localising national RRT SOPs to their province.

Before 2025, all disease surveillance data in Raph's province in PNG lived in Microsoft Excel spreadsheets and was manually reviewed. He taught himself to code, studying at 4am, and built a live dashboard to track them in real time. Read more: www.fieldepiinaction.com/stories/prot... #WFED

Julianne Gumbat, FETPNG fellow and East Sepik's Provincial Disease Control Officer, is leading PNG's response to the first 2026 measles case. She's running contact tracing, case finding, booster coverage and IPC support, and has been recognised by NDoH for helping prevent wider spread.

In PNG's Enga Province, immunisation data looks good on paper, but coverage remains low. Ms Rita Ephraim looked more closely at why: inconsistent record-keeping means children who've missed vaccines aren't being followed up. She's now testing interventions to fix that.

Congratulations to A/Prof Tambri Housen, appointed to the Steering Committee of the Global Outbreak Alert and Response Network (GOARN). Tambri will serve a four-year term, contributing to GOARN's work on outbreak alerts, rapid response, and health capacity strengthening.

Communities often notice health events first, in people, animals, or the environment. The One Health frontline #FETP trains district-level fellows across human, animal, and environmental health to catch those signals early. Now expanded to Southern Highlands, with 10 fellows in Cohort 7.

During her Intermediate #FETP, Ms Emma Kitan found industrial runoff was putting Morobe communities at higher risk of diarrhoeal disease. Her field project will strengthen industry compliance, improve community water and hygiene practices, and boost local response capacity.

During the 1st phase of his Intermediate #FETP, Mr Timon Arufi from Southern Highlands found transport barriers are driving high rates of unsupervised delivery. He will now test solutions including inpatient beds, a dedicated ambulance, and a community waiting house to see if they make a difference.

The first quarter of 2026 has been a busy and productive one for Field Epidemiology in Action (FEiA). Key milestones include the graduation of the third cohort of field epidemiologists from the Solomon Islands FETP; commencement of the 11th cohort of iFETPNG, now fully accredited as a Diploma; preparations for launching national field epidemiology training programs (FETPs) in Vanuatu and Fiji (commencing later in 2026); and the completion of a practical economic modelling and planning tool to support the scaling of field epidemiology training in India.
