You are giving me serious flashbacks to my own childhood And not just schoolwork, I loved playing the violin, but achieving half an hour of practicing frequently required an hour of my mother's attention. (Fwiw, supplemental afternoon meds worked really well for me)

I would argue that quite a lot of things did meaningfully break between 1914 and 1945! The fact that we emerged from it in a reasonably stable place was by no means a given, and doesn't change the significant, and in some cases enduring, harms that happened along the way

Say what you will about her, at least MCU Wanda never committed genocide against the mutant population, so she's way ahead of her comics counterpart

Kieron Gillen and Esad Ribic's run on the title a few years ago was fantastic, though

I have a friend who's a harpist. We're talking full-size, six-and-a-half feet tall, concert grand harp, not some lap harp. You have no idea how much worse it could be than a cello.

I mean, true, but also I saw him when I was in London last year, and his performance was by far and away the best part of that production.

My grandmother Anne, and her sisters Monica and... Hilda. (She exclusively went by Billy, it was years before I learned that wasn't her "real" name)

I spent the rest of the day hobbling around leaning on a broomstick cane, so you wouldn't be wrong

I quoted The Dark Knight to a room full of teenagers recently, and not only didn't they recognize the quote, or the (mediocre) Joker impersonation, most of them hadn't ever heard of the movie.

I feel like this is particularly riffing on Avicii, though?

(and especially given the implied Jim Crow-era South setting, having a Black man playing Hades gave it some fascinating implications which he did a brilliant job of layering in to his performance)

But then you'd have lost Eva Noblezada, and I don't know if that's worth the tradeoff. I was always kind of meh on "Flowers" until I heard her perform it live, it was revelatory.

I was particularly looking forward to seeing Page when the original cast came to London, and was super disappointed when he got hurt, but then I was blown away by how good Phillip Boykin was in the role.

In the show Motel says that they were going to Warsaw until they saved up enough money to go to America, and I always assumed they never made it, and they and all of their family were killed in the Holocaust. Growing up the descendant of survivors definitely gives you an interesting perspective!

I wonder what sort of odds you could get on the Patriots winning the Super Bowl the day after Drew Bledsoe's injury

I feel like there needs to be some sort of sliding scale, when I'm 50, I don't want people using pictures of me as an awkward teenager

When my grandmother and her family were fleeing the Nazis in spring of 1940, her oldest sister (16 or so) brought bathing suits instead of clothes, on the (accurate!) theory that if she didn't have clothing, someone would find a way to provide, but no one would give her a new bathing suit.

Apparently the new revival (big budget! Starring Aaron Tveit and Lea Michele!) rewrote the book entirely from scratch And it's even worse than any of the previous versions of the book 😅

In the immortal words of Sir Terry Pratchett
An illustration of an exchange from the novel "The Hogfather" in which Death is filling in for Father Christmas

Mother: you can't give her that, it's not safe!
Death: it's a sword. They're not meant to be safe.
Albert (Death's assistant): she's a child!
Death: it's educational
Albert: what if she hurts herself?
Death that will be a very important lesson.

I'd say that HP is a fairly special case of "great art made by awful people", in that supporting it puts money into JKR's pockets, and she's using that money to attack trans people's rights, so there's a much more direct harm being caused.

The recipe my mother used to make! Absolutely a bit of a hassle to make, but so worth it. (Substitute bread crumbs or more flour for the matzah meal)
