Our findings provide evidence for, and dissociate, attractive and repulsive serial biases in trustworthiness impressions, with implications ranging from everyday interactions to eyewitness identification. 5/6

These biases also depend on identity similarity and spatial proximity. Trust impressions of the current face are attracted towards the past when successive faces look similar and appear nearby, but are repelled away from the past when they are more distinct and appear in different locations. 4/6

We found that exposure to previous faces can bias current trustworthiness impressions. Brief exposure to a face makes the successive face seem more similar to the previous one (serial dependence), whereas longer exposure pushes trust impressions away from the past face (negative aftereffects). 3/6

Judging trustworthiness influences economic decisions, hiring outcomes, and even legal sentences. Are they determined only by the face we are currently looking at, or does the previous face seen influence the current impression? We investigated this with a trustworthiness judgement task. 2/6

Can faces seen in the past influence how trustworthy a new face looks? Our new paper with Clare Sutherland, Linda Jeffery, and @mauromanassi.bsky.social, shows that impressions of trustworthiness are dynamically shaped by recent visual experience. Link to the article: rdcu.be/fnqIL 🧵1/6

Excited to be speaking at this event with colleagues from @abdnpsych.bsky.social! I'll be diving into how context shapes who looks trustworthy and how that plays out in The Traitors🏰

I really liked @dididu.bsky.social’s booth at #ECVP2025 Illusion Night. Tried Celebrity EYE-Q, what a brilliant and fun way to showcase holistic face processing!

Taken together, our findings confirm that (1) temporal context shapes trustworthiness impressions, by showing that visual adaptation affects trust judgements, and that (2) past emotional expressions influence following impressions of trustworthiness and dominance. 7/8

Our results support the emotion overgeneralization hypothesis (suggesting that we overgeneralise subtle emotional cues in neutral faces when judging others' traits), and help understanding why we form such impressions, despite little evidence they reflect others’ true traits. 6/8

Importantly, using anti-expressions (stimuli designed to bias neutral faces toward the original expression and minimise semantic adaptation), suggest a common perceptual mechanism in the visual representation of emotional expressions and facial trait evaluations. 5/8

Fiammetta Marini @fiammarini.bsky.social · 03/10/2024
Moreover, we found that trustworthiness impressions can be shaped by other facial characteristics: adaptation to different facial expressions (happy/angry/fear) significantly influenced subsequent trust and dominance evaluations. 4/8

Fiammetta Marini @fiammarini.bsky.social · 03/10/2024
We found that prolonged exposure to (un)trustworthy faces biases the impression of subsequent faces away from the past (so new faces look more (un)trustworthy). Building on previous evidence, this result confirms a robust face aftereffect for trustworthiness impressions. 3/8

Fiammetta Marini @fiammarini.bsky.social · 03/10/2024
Although most research has considered facial trust impressions to be stable over time, face perception in general is dynamically influenced by the temporal context history, as evidenced by visual adaptation. 2/8

Does past visual experience influence facial first impressions? Our new research with C Sutherland, L Jeffery, S Maisey, and @mauromanassi.bsky.social shows that trustworthiness/dominance impressions are influenced by previously seen faces, even by emotional expressions. tinyurl.com/bdh3mcf4 🧵1/8
