Don‘t know when, where, and why I saved this image, but it seems somewhat fitting.

Cross-level interactions show older respondents are more likely to oppose dual citizenship (Panel A). Additionally, immigration concerns interact with applicants' country of origin and employment status (Panel B and C).
image shows four conditional-effects plots of cross-level interactions from a linear multilevel regression model for naturalisation preferences on respondent characteristics.

The analysis shows respondents prefer hypothetical applicants from the UK over those from Turkey and India. However, compared to merit-based characteristics, country-of-origin effects are small. Language proficiency, stable employment, and also dual citizenship matter more.
The image shows the results of a linear multilevel regression model for naturalisation preferences on vignette dimensions, presented as a coefficient plot.

Additionally, I conducted a vignette study to examine whether recent shifts in attitudes also appear when respondents evaluate multiple applicant characteristics at once.
The image shows an example vignette used in the survey. The text says: "A male individual from India, who has been living in Germany for 5 years, who is employed, who speaks little German, who wishes to renounce his current citizenship. Should this person be granted German citizenship?" The response scale ranges from 'Strongly disagree' to 'Strongly agree'.

Using data from three waves of the German General Social Survey (ALLBUS, 1996/2006/2016), I find that public opinion toward naturalisation requirements has shifted over time.
The figure shows to what extent individuals deem criteria such as being born in Germany, language proficiency, and extended residence periods important for citizenship acquisition. The data comes from three waves (1996, 2006, and 2016) of the German General Social Survey (ALLBUS) and the response scale ranges from (1) 'Not at all important' to (7) 'Very important'. The main findings are described in the main post.

A research project I am involved in is organizing a conference on the integration and naturalization of refugees and migrants and has just published the Call for Papers. The conference will take place on 13–14 November 2025 in Berlin. Looking forward to seeing you in Berlin! #migcitsky
