#SilentSunday
Fall scene, with the tops of birch and rowan trees in the foreground. The birch leaves are yellow, while the rowan is covered in berries. Across the valley, the hills are a combination of fields, dark spruce, and yellow birch. The top of the ridge is covered in a light coat of snow. The sky is covered in grey, heavy clouds. Just left of centre is a lone, flying bird, too far away to be identified but likely a magpie.

A European Aspen tree from below. The leaves have turned a lovely golden colour for the fall, and in this shot are lit by the sun. The sky behind is a deep blue, with a hint of cloud in the upper right corner.

[alcohol (photo)] Time for the Friday ‘phroaig. If we can’t be on Islay, we can bring a little bit of Islay to us…
Two low tumblers sitting on a kitchen island, with a diamond pattern cut into the glass. The one of the left is green glass, the one on the right, blue. Behind and between them is a bottle of Laphroaig single malt whisky from Islay, 10 y.o. The glasses are, as yet, empty. And so the pouring of the whisky is still at the anticipation stage (which is no longer the case as this alt. text is being written.)

Ok, so writing *is* happening. Not the way I usually spend the last week of my summer vacation, but perhaps I'll finally get this damn article out of my head… #Writing #AcademicWriting #AcademicLife
A desk in a home office. The desk is covered by piles of books, there is a vertical mouse and a keyboard, as well as a laptop and external monitor (giving a provisional 2-monitor setup. The desk is flanked by bookcases, and behind the desk the wall is dominated by a window looking out at vegetation.

I seem to have found a secret passage…
A jumble of roots and tree trunks, growing up a small, rocky cliff. Behind some of the trees, a rock slide has created a small cave.

The cave is dark and the back cannot be seen, appearing as a black void.

Sunday, April 5th, and there’s heavy snowfall. This is a view of a garden covered in snow. At the edge of the garden is a white, wooden fence and beyond that, two white houses. There are two trees on the left, just on the other side of the fence. The sky is grey, and the photo captures many snowflakes in the air.

Now, what? Can’t I sleep in the sunbeam in peace? #Mastodog #DogsOfMastodon
A close-up of Neville the labradoodle lying in a sunbeam. The sun is illuminating his left / our right, and the contrast between light and shadow means much of the right side of his face is very dark. We can see a piercing stare from his left eye. Most likely wondering what his silly human is up to.

In the foreground, on our right, is a rubber ball, lying there ignored.

Neville demonstrates the classic 3-paw-stack technique. (And is sporting a smart new spring haircut.)
Neville, the charcoal grey labradoodle is on a green couch trying to sleep. His paws are stretched towards the camera, and the two hind paws and his left front paw are stacked one on top of the other.

Sometimes it’s all about taking a break and looking out the window at just the right time.
A snow-covered garden, bordered by a fence. Beyond the fence are a couple of trees and a house. The sky is just clearing, and the sun is shining through a hole in the clouds causing the trees to cast stark shadows on the snow covering the garden.

Dawn over Gothenburg
A view of Gothenburg from a hotel window. In the foreground is a small square. Behind it is the moat that once went around the walled city, the water in it frozen solid. Beyond the moat is a park filled with winter trees, and the tops of buildings can be seen beyond them again. Finally, the pre-dawn light fills the eastern sky which is dotted with light clouds.

Nothing unusual to see here. Just the Canadian armed forces training for to meet the greatest military threat they currently face … [checks notes] … an invasion by the US.
Justin Massie writes on Twitter: “military planners are modelling a U.S. invasion from the south, expecting American forces to overcome Canada’s strategic positions on land and at sea within a week and possibly as quickly as two days.

Canada does not have the number of military personnel or the sophisticated equipment needed to fend off a conventional American attack, they said. So, the military envisions unconventional warfare in which small groups of irregular military or armed civilians would resort to ambushes, sabotage, drone warfare or hit-and-run tactics.

The aim of such tactics would be to impose mass casualties on U.S. occupying forces, the official said.

This rupture in the joint defence agreement would likely see France or Britain, nuclear-weapon states, being called on to provide support and defence for Canada against the U.S.”

Ireland has been good to me this Christmas.
A scene from a west coast. The sun is low in a clear sky, and hangs over a small group of houses on the promontory in the distance. The ocean laps gently on the beach in the mid ground, and in the foreground is a grass-covered dune.Waves lapping on the shoals, throwing white spray into the air. The sky is clear and blue.Closeup of some stones on a sandy beach. There is a little water between some of them, and on the left are some footprints left by a human and a dog.A ruined croft in a green field. In the background is Spanish Point golf club, and some houses. Beyond them is the ocean. The sky is perfectly clear and blue.

Every now and then I open my junk drawers (yes, plural) and look at what I have there. While it’s mostly old cables and chargers, there’s enough other stuff that I think «I should go through all that stuff. Someday.» And then I put things back and close it up again…
On the left: a black iPod with click wheel. From sometime around 2003-04. On the right: a yellow Sony AM/FM Sports Walkman. Perhaps from 1986-ish.

Nope. No aurora to see here.
The first of two images of a back yard seen through a rain-covered window. There are a handful of magpies on the grass, hunkering low, the tree in the background is bare of leaves and the sky is grey, wet, and heavy. The second of two shots showing a wet and dreary back yard. In this shot, the focus is on the many rain drops on the window, and the background is out of focus.

A forest scene on a sunny afternoon. The foreground is dominated by tall, straight red pine while a clearing can be seen in the background. Beyond the clearing are more trees. The forest floor is covered by low, green vegetation — which, on closer inspection, would reveal themselves to be wild blueberry bushes — while a pond can be glimpsed in the clearing (which, on closer inspection, would reveal itself to be a marsh).

There is a small piece of the forest path in the lower left foreground. The sky is a brilliant and cloudless blue.

Neville’s really getting into this ‘working from home’ thing… #MastoDog
Neville, the not-so-small-as-he-thinks labradoodle sleeps contentedly in a tight space under a desk. He’s jammed in between the wall, a garbage can, and the office chair — all the while ensuring he can track every movement of the chair’s occupant by lying on the occupant’s right foot.

Neville, the charcoal grey labradoodle, seated up. His left paw is on the knee of yours truly (the only part of me visible) while his right paw is on the arm rest of the chair. An overview of the local village after sunset from part-way up a hill. The hill in question is used as a ski hill in winter, and the caretakers have already begun tamping down the snow. The village is in the mid ground, with outdoor lights creating pools of brightness on the snow. The local church, towards the right, is lit with orange-looking floodlights. In the distance is a glimpse of lake Mjøsa, and the hills beyond are dark silhouettes dotted with lights. The sky is dark blue with an orange glow still visible on the horizon.

I recently learned there has been a church in this area since the 1100s. The foundations of the current church are from the early 1500s, but it has burned down at least twice. The current structure is from the end of the 1700s.

Friday night we had a brief, but spectacular display of northern lights. I ran in to get my «real» camera and took a bunch of shots, but only this one turned into anything worth keeping.

In the foreground are rowan trees, full of berries. The northern lights behind them show as a horizontal band of green. Then, there are streaks of purple emerging from the green, and fading into the night sky.

While the photo gives the impression of distinct colour, in the moment and to the naked eye, they appeared white. Despite living in northern countries for most of my life, this is the first time I’ve actually seen northern lights since the early 1980s.
