Imagine being so thick you think this analogy holds up
“I [billionaire investor doing his best to remind us all that wealth truly does not correlate to intelligence or wisdom] write everything using AI now for the same reason I use a calculator when I do math problems.”

A favorite photo you’ve taken
Niece and nephew in front of street sign that reads “The Butts” in Warwick, England

Dangler blindness mystifies me—why is it so common? How many people read this sign before it was installed, recently, at a beautiful overlook near my office? Has to have been at least…five? Been giving it the stink-eye ever since it showed up:
Historical placard in Edmonds, WA, that reads, in part, “Originally a dense forest, the 1890s saw Edmonds transformed…”

People can be pretty great sometimes wapo.st/4q8iFsE (gift link)
A year after the crash, the grief still comes in waves. On the eve of the anniversary, families linked by the tragedy gathered at D.A.R. Constitution Hall in D.C. to honor the strangers who stepped in to help them carry the sudden and lingering sorrow: the hotel employee who in the days after the crash offered families a warm drink and a listening ear; the mortician who has called a man’s parents nearly every week to check on them; the scuba divers who returned day after day to the frigid water in search of items that might give people some small measure of comfort.

I was up the middle tower (Jin Mao) in 2009, when it was the second tallest in Lujiazui. It would be absolutely amazing to go back there now

Hey Jamelle—one of Rick’s guidebook editor/researchers here—waking up to this post just as I’m finishing leading a Rick Steves tour through the Alps is even better than seeing Mont Blanc at sunrise. The stanning is mutual!
Mont Blanc, Dome du Gouter, Aiguille du Gouter, and Glacier des Bossons as seen from Chamonix hotel bed of a very sleepy tour guide at sunrise

My uncle’s idle email asking me whether his classical-music-station DJ had mispronounced “Tannhäuser” led to a three-page answer and the making of this, which no one wanted, yet my brain insisted on it

No joke: this came up (I’ve saved it for frequent use and I love it so much)

For work reasons I stay in (and check guidebook listings of) many, many European hotel rooms and this one in Montreux—in a fancy place with a wrought-iron balcony overlooking Lake Geneva—will never leave my memory
Swiss hotel room with a bed for two that’s right next to a bathroom* that lacks not just a door but walls

*More of a bath AREA, I guess. The cleaning corner. The plumbing…zone

Have sunken?!?
While the sailboat, the Amidala, did not sink, pods of orcas have sunken several vessels in recent years. [excerpt from NYTimes article]

Congrats, Mark! (Also, you beat by Tuesday best by more than 1:30.) Are you planning on stopping now? (Please tell me how one does that)

I had this exact watch, and I LOVED it. I especially loved how much it resembled the clocks in Swiss train stations. The one I have now was the closest thing I could find, last time I needed a new watch—still like it, but miss the old one
