Today the socks are a lighthouse, standing atop a chalk cliff thinking: “I used to be a lot further from the edge. I wonder what falling will feel like.”
A pair of black socks decorated with bright red and white lighthouses, and a few white gulls flying around them. Oh, and red toes. That’s the socks, not the lighthouses.

This is not a fireplace.
Photo of a very large sideboard with an utterly pointless knee hole, as if it were a desk. There’s a fender in front of the knee hole.

And there, anchored on the horizon, sits Death Star. Not wanted here, and seemingly nowhere to go.

Fifty shades of grey. And everywhere the sound of geese, arriving from the north.

The idea is you float these great, filthy buckets above oil wells, and from time to time an oil tanker comes along and empties them. D-I-L calls this one Death Star. It’s been parked in Nigg for years. At last it’s being taken away. Though the carrier’s 3 point turn is going to be fun.

The training ship Thalassa was supposed to leave Wick, head north round the top of Scotland and end up in Ullapool. They took one look at the weather in the Pentland Firth, turned south and here they are in Cromarty. Very sensible. See alt text.
The three masted schooner Thalassa is anchored off Cromarty Pier. Behind in the distance the north side of the Firth is getting mightily rained on under an angry sky. Out of camera shot to the left, a wall of rainwater is bearing down with a bright, full spectrum rainbow.

Still, bearing in mind how many sailors have died in shipwrecks over the centuries, this is a good place to be today.

Autumn’s coming. But only at the top of this tree.
Photo of a deciduous tree, with all its leaves still attached. The ones at the very top are bright yellow. Everything else is still a dark, summery green.

Last knockings of honeysuckle. The few remaining flowers, and the berries the birds haven’t eaten yet. All looking good in bright sunshine against a clear blue sky.

Training for first time kayakers and paddle boarders. Before you can be trusted on your own, you have to know how to get back on if/when you fall off/capsize. “How can I fall in the water? Let me count the ways.” Answer: lots! See alt text. 2 >
A collection of paddle boarders on the Caledonian Canal. One has capsized for the fifth time and managed to get her paddle board upside down on top of someone else’s kayak.

Days are shortening, berries are on trees, and leaves are starting to turn. Swallows and martins are gathering to talk about route maps south, and the harvest is yielding Christmas brochures. Sunflowers have become indecisive.
A field of tournesols unable to decide which way to turn, as the sun plays hide and seek.

If I sit here staring long enough and hard enough, maybe they’ll stop gassing, come out of that bakery and finish off my walk. Alt text.
An elderly brown spaniel (greying muzzle and toes) is sitting motionless on a wet pavement, tied by its lead to the fence. It’s gazing fixedly across the road to the bakery door, behind which buying goodies has turned into an excessively long social event.

D’accord. See alt text.
We are gazing, with slavering anticipation, into a glass of Valpolicella Ripasso. Which is nice.A new sheep’s cheese for me, with an appealing and not overwhelming pong. It will go well with the wine. Which is also nice.

Yesterday we went to the Classic Car show, where we had fun identifying almost every car we’ve ever owned (my MGB GT was white and rusty), but the star for us was this Citroën Light 15, shared childhood memories of Paris.
A collection of classic cars in a field. In the foreground an orange MGB GT and the bonnet of a Triumph Vitesse. On the far side, two MacBraynes buses in red and green livery.A perfect black Citroën Light 15 saloon, face on to camera, straight out of MacGregor, with proper headlights on proper mudguards, and the inverted double chevron on the radiator.

I could still use a Hollerith hand punch, though I haven’t touched one since 1980. Funny that my dad used one at Bletchley Park in WWII.

Skiffies gonna skiff. Today saw the annual Cromarty regatta, with teams from the length and breadth of Scotland. Fun and sweat was had by all, and it’s the taking part that counts, not the winning.

Now the art, the summer exhibition at An Talla Solais. Several rooms full of really good stuff. Of course it’s important that the trout is on sycamore. ->

We weren’t expecting to find a 3 masted clipper in the harbour, nor one named after Fryderyk Chopin. In the stern a group of people are getting a lecture, but whether it’s about sailing or music, your guess is as good as mine. ->

So yesterday we fancied some longer than average #stravaiging, so we left the east coast and crossed the country to the west side. For art’s sake. Why else, apart from lunch? Though we might have needed our boat polished. ->

Just as the eclipse came due, clouds covered the sky. Still, we had this 2,850 seater sewage generator to look at earlier. Hint: look at the name of the ship.

#Stravaiging This garden is small but always spectacular. These flowers are trained to be shoulder high, so they can be seen over the wall in the street. We think they are lilies but aren’t sure. What do you think?
A view over the wall of a small back garden. In the background are sweet peas. In the foreground are tall, brilliantly yellow flowers, supported by canes.

#Stravaiging today. You could smell this one from some way off.
A close up of tightly packed roses in a hedge. Colours mostly deep pink for new blooms, and one or two paler one which are going over.

“‘Northernesia’: a debilitating condition that renders the sufferer unable to know where the North is.” (George Gunn, on @BellaCaledonia) cdn.masto.host/mastodonie/m...
An annotated satellite map showing the United Kingdom. A vertical black double-headed arrow spans the entire north-south extent of the landmass, labeled with the text "Height of the UK". A horizontal black double-headed arrow crosses through the middle of the map, accompanied by the text "Halfway". There is a red dot located in central England, connected by a thin red line to the text "No 10 North".

Just seen on Mastodon. We absolutely have to get this corruption out of our lives.
A government customer of NSO Group used the company’s Pegasus spyware to hack into the phone of a European politician, who at the time was serving on an EU committee tasked with investigating the spyware industry.
