Now you've got an actual phenomenon of kids massacring everyone around them in explosions of all-consuming violence and you always get people trying to make it into a Carrie story, but the killers don't really look like Carrie do they, what do you do about that adapting the Carrie in 2026

It's less about documenting something that actually happened than giving form to an anxiety of public humiliation. Carrie is compelling because most people have felt like Carrie at some point even if the worst thing that ever actually happened to them was one time the barista got their order wrong

but it's not some cathartic retribution, the reality is an infinite swarm of giggling Beavises who realized that being a mass murderer is basically the same as being a rockstar but more attainable and nobody with the power to really cares to stop them. Judgement rarely pleases the judged

It's a shame because you could write an absolutely amazing Carrie adaptation around this idea now. Carrie was written in the 70s when that was still just an adolescent power fantasy of the powerless delivering righteous, Godlike judgement on their tormentors. Now we get a Carrie every week

I wonder sometimes if we're looking at two competing theories of governance at work in Washington: one where you tease the idea of doing something so depraved our whole concept of civilization is founded in opposition to it then see what the polls say

Ahti's cool I think the basic observation here is if an alien wants people not to notice the holes in its human impersonation pretending to just be Finnish is a classic and effective cover story

It's not an X-Man origin story the fire happened because she wanted it to happen, and she kept going until she ran out of targets. That's the story, she's a magical school shooter

OK but the tech doesn't work without trillions of dollars and ripping off everybody who has ever made anything for a living. I could probably make a pretty kickass Tamagotchi if you gave me the GDP of America and let me vivisect every dog but that isn't a praiseworthy accomplishment for what it took

After a two-term realignment there's no reason to disavow him, he's not a monster or a visionary because that would imply that things were ever not thus. The guys who worked for him seamlessly pivoted to working for Trump or dispensing savvy political wisdom to liberals in the Atlantic

I can't forget how evil and freakish the Bush administration was perceived to be at the time... until he left office, and the dem supermajority declined to treat them like criminals and largely picked up where he left off, and his way of doing things gradually became the new normal

It'll gas you up all day about what a genius you are so people who wish they were creative spend all day making one nonworking "invention" after another, those who want to be clever spend all day "debating" it; if their stuff isn't warmly received irl, well, those guys must be jelly

This might be how things work out if an opposition partt presents a clear contrasting political vision and manages to decouple themselves from the failure of the federal government in general, but ope nevermind there the big one goes trying to make capital and trans-bashing their brand again

Which significant politicians of the last decade haven't scored points by running against their own record? Everyone who gives a shit has a whole suite of cliches ready to go for why it's good actually. But he's learned and grown and even rhetorically supporting change is beyond a democrat of 2026
