When he was five, he would spend hours staring at the blurry shifting of trees outside his parents' humble cottage in Ottawa.

Which earned him two things; glasses, and an autism diagnosis.

This is also generally why he avoided clubs — and this one was obnoxiously full for a Thursday night. He squinted against the competing streaks egregiously splashed across sweaty, overperfumed bodies packed so close Yankee candle could bottle the combined odor and simply name it 'Hell.'

The music, which wasn't particularly good to begin with, rattled into his ribcage like it wanted to co-opt his heartbeat. Supposedly that was the appeal. It made Shane mildly short of breath, and he wasn't even in the press. As a proper introvert he'd wallflowered up the moment Rose left to chase down someone she recognized.

Rose stood out from the writhing mass as a focal spot of auburn hair and sequins, dancing with someone Shane could only assume was the friend. Meeting her eyes, he offered her a tiny wave and smile, which she returned enthusiastically with her whole body. He chuckled.

He loved her — platonically, they'd learned, after attempting to date in film school — and she deserved to celebrate her first big casting without having to worry. Shane was tall, sober, and visibly difficult to murder, making him the safest chaperone for her to get shitfaced with.

These were objective facts.

He still really really really did not want to be here, which was also an objective fact.

Megumi had racked up street fight wins before he could even shave, middle and high school punctuated by parent-teacher conferences and sneaking home late to hide the bruises.

Gojo and Geto knew, though. Geto disapproved, but since Megumi only fought bullies and couldn't be reasoned with, his way of keeping Megumi safe became taking him to the dojo.

Gojo would just ask if he won, cackle, and tell him not to get himself killed. But he always silently paid the fines and made sure the school stayed off Megumi's back.

Megumi realized as an adult it wasn't the most … morally correct thing to do, but neither was a society that actively victim-blamed and protected bullies with 'promising futures.'

Gojo never had a problem using an unethical technicality to balance out an overt wrong. It was one of the few things Megumi respected about him.

But things changed as they all grew up.

Adults played dirty — brought pipes and knives or way too many dudes to take on one lanky seventeen-year-old with half-assed self defense techniques.

Megumi was a smart kid, he thought. But it didn't take a genius to see when 'loss' becomes synonymous with 'funeral,' you fucking run.

Except once, he wasn't fast enough.

Todo was funny that way; like Yuji, smarter than he looked and often underestimated. (His secondary commitment after judo was the classic literature club, funnily enough.) Probably one of the reasons they got along so well. Most of the time.

"Sure," Yuji chirped, hoping Todo wouldn't clock his false cheer. "You get all breezy. I'm off to the showers."

But before Yuji could slip away, a brick of a hand fell heavily on his shoulder.

"Brother." Todo's voice had softened. "There's room for more than one type of airing-out in a locker room. Is something bothering you?"

He started to turn, only to abort as he caught a flash of flesh.
