I always loved Sera’s takes, but Singer also found Sam sympathetic. I find it Sad, or perhaps frustrating’s a better way of describing it, that so many didn’t sympathize with Sam during season 4, when the show clearly depicts the manipulation, by Ruby & the angels & the addiction he experienced.

RS: The classic addict is always trying to make excuses as to why it’s okay. In this case he has “this is the only way I can kill Lilith,” which is a strong excuse. He plays it really well. I found him incredibly sympathetic throughout the whole thing. He was great.
SG: Yeah, he really stepped up to the material.

SG: The idea is, when you’re detoxing off of something that’s very addictive and really has its claws in you, it’s doing whatever it can to keep you under its thumb. And so all of these scenes are kind of saying, don’t trust Dean, trust whoever and whatever is going to give you comfort and push you toward this other road.

SG: This is the kind of stuff that Jared is really, really good at. He finds the nobility in these morally ambiguous things that Sam is going through. When I watch him go through this, I understand why he’s doing it. You wish he would listen to his brother; you understand why he’s suicidal. Poor guy, if only he’d had a mom. <giggling>
