and to Daggerheart's credit—while this was definitely the upper limit of what I think I'm capable of keeping track of by myself—it was actually manageable and moved quite fast, thanks to many countdown timers, the game's very clever initiative system, and the incredibly useful freshcutgrass app 😍

it was absolute chaos. the PCs and the allied knights & NPC were up against the soldiers, riflemen, priest, archmage, & their big beserker boss. all the rest of the monsters were just indiscriminately attacking everybody on both sides. and everyone's objectives were all over the place, too. wild.

I forgot to take a picture of the setup, but tonight's epic Daggerheart encounter consisted of: 4 PCs 12 allied knights an allied knight captain an allied NPC 14 soldiers 3 riflemen a war priest an archmage a boss guy a giant monstrosity 4 little ranged monsters and approximately 180 tiny beetles

You cannot design away bad players in a tabletop rpg. You cannot build enough guard rails to stop bad faith play. The only rule that helps is, "Play With Better People." Because those guard rails suck for every good faith player that has to bump into them, design for the people who WANT to PLAY.
