men will literally invent therapy instead of dismantling the patriarchy
It seems possible that Freud had to discover the very specialized technique of psychoanalysis because there were crucial parts of the human experience that were not well pro vided for in fully acceptable and socially open ways within the culture of the dominant group. That is, they were not well pro vided for by the dominants for the dominants themselves. These
same realms of experience have been consistently relegated to
women. What has psychoanalysis really been dealing with? First, Freud focused on bodily, sexual, and childish experience and
said that these are of determining but hidden importance. More recent psychoanalytic theory tends to emphasize the deeper issues of feelings of vulnerability, weakness, helpless- ness, dependency, and the basic emotional connections be- tween an individual and other people. That is, psychoanalysis has in a very large sense been engaged in bringing about the acknowledgment of these crucial realms of the human ex- perience. It has done this, I think, without recognizing that these areas of experience may have been kept out of people's conscious awareness by virtue of their being so heavily dis- sociated from men and so heavily associated with women. It is not that men, like all people, do not have experience in these areas. As psychoanalysis has been engaged in pointing out, these are most significant human experiences. Indeed, they involve the necessities of human experience. One might even say that we came to "need" psychoanalysis precisely because certain essential parts of men's experience have been very problematic and therefore were unacknowledged, un-
explored, and denied.

Journal article abstract:

Normative, Gain and Hedonic Goal Frames Guiding Environmental Behavior

Siegwart Lindenberg* and Linda Steg
University of Groningen

This article discusses new developments about goal-dependent framing and mul- tiple goal frames (sometimes also called "multiple motives"), which are highly relevant for understanding environmental behavior. We introduce goal-framing theory, which postulates that goals "frame" the way people process information and act upon it. Three goal frames are distinguished: a hedonic, gain, and nor- mative goal frame. In general, multiple goals are active at any given time, which may (or may not) be compatible; that is, the strength of the focal goal may be in- fluenced by other goals that are in the background. Based on an extensive review of studies in environmental psychology, we suggest those conditions under which each goal frame may be dominant in influencing environmental behavior. In the environmental context, normative goal frames imply acting pro-environmentally, while gain and hedonic goal frames often result in not acting in an environmentally sound manner. Next, we argue that pro-environmental behavior may be promoted by strengthening normative goals or by making gain and hedonic goals less incom- patible with normative goals. Finally, based on goal-framing theory, we suggest
questions to be addressed in future research.

During moments like these I think about GOP accounts posting King quotes on MLK Day
X post from @HouseGOP, 1/19/26:

Today we celebrate the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., civil rights leader who shared those immortal words: "I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character."

"A primary reason why most adults in industrial societies do not remember their dreams is that they have no socially and emotionally supportive contexts in which to do so. My experience of more than twenty years is that as soon as such a context is created, then even the most stubborn failure to recall dreams is usually overcome."

"Throughout this historic year, we rejoice in the triumph of the American spirit and rededicate ourselves to the cause of liberty and justice for all," writes Trump. "In special honor of 250 glorious years of American independence and on the weekend of Rededicate 250 — a national jubilee of prayer, praise, and thanksgiving - Jewish Americans are encouraged to observe a national Sabbath."
Rededicate 250 is a Christian gathering in Washington on Sunday, May 17, that will be attended by GOP officials and prominent Christian clergy.

Identity Clinic in Anchorage is closing???
Email from Tom Pittman at Identity:

To our patients, supporters, partners, and broader LGBTQ A2S+ community,
It is with a heavy heart that I write to share that Identity is closing.
In-person care will continue through the end of this week. Telehealth care will continue through May 1. After May 1, our providers will continue supporting patients with refills and other critical transition needs to help ensure continuity of care during this process. May 15 will be Identity's final day of service.

As I’ve written elsewhere, heredity isn’t exactly a taboo on the left, nor is there any shortage of debate on this issue. The problem is the lack of rigorous thought about race: ktarlow.com/research/pdf...

The Ideology of Isolation

by Rebecca Solnit

If you boil the strange soup of contemporary right-wing ideology down to a sort of bouillon cube, you find the idea that things are not connected to other things, that people are not connected to other people, and that they are all better off unconnected. The core values are individual freedom and individual responsibility: yourself for yourself on your own. Out of this Glorious Disconnect comes all sorts of illogical thinking. Taken to its conclusion, this worldview dictates that even facts are freestanding items that the self-made man can manufacture for use as he sees fit.
This is the modern ideology we still call conservative, though it is really a sort of loopy libertarianism that inverts some of the milder propositions of earlier conservative thinkers. "There is no such thing as society," Margaret Thatcher said in 1987. The rest of her famous remark is less frequently quoted:

There is [a] living tapestry of men and women and people and the beauty of that tapestry and the quality of our lives will depend upon how much each of us is prepared to take responsibility for ourselves and each of us prepared to turn round and help by our own efforts those who are unfortunate.

A book for our time
Two-page spread from The Lorax. A factory labeled THNEEDS churns out smoke.

I meant no harm. I most truly did not.
But I had to grow bigger. So bigger I got.
I biggered my factory. I biggered my roads.
I biggered my wagons. I biggered the loads of the Thneeds I shipped out. I was shipping them forth to the South! To the East! To the West! To the North!
I went right on biggering ... selling more Thneeds.
And I biggered my money, which everyone needs.

I’m always thinking about Baldwin’s phrase, “achieving our identity” as a multiracial nation
In short, we, the black and the white, deeply need each other here if we are really to become a nation-if we are really, that is, to achieve our identity, our maturity, as men and women. To create one nation has proved to be a hideously difficult task; there is certainly no need now to create two, one black and one white. But white men with far more political power than that possessed by the Nation of Islam movement have been advocating exactly this, in effect, for genera-tions.

From my family’s homebrew haggadah:
Myths about Passover by Rabbi Danya
Ruttenberg (excerpt)
A lot of literalist religious perspectives, both Jewish and Christian, presume that the Exodus story is a faithful recording of historical fact. But the historical accuracy of the Exodus is hotly debated among scholars. Archeologists and Egyptologists have never found evidence that could be directly connected to Israelites' enslavement or departure, or of a large group of people-600,000 men, plus women and children—wandering the Sinai Peninsula for 40 years.
Regardless, some truths are deeper than history: The story of enslavement and liberation is a deep, indelible facet of Jewish theology. And a mature faith can hold an expansive understanding of God and holy texts that embraces the ways this story—no matter whether it happened historically—helps us see who we are and the nature of our obligations to those oppressed today.

Whitman, “Years of the Modern”
Is humanity forming en-masse? for lo, tyrants tremble,
crowns
grow dim,
The earth, restive, confronts a new era, perhaps a general
divine war,
No one knows what will happen next, such portents fill the
days and nights;
Years prophetical! the space ahead as I walk, as I vainly try
to pierce it, is full of phantoms,
Unborn deeds, things soon to be, project their shapes
around me,
This incredible rush and heat, this strange ecstatic fever of
dreams
O years!
Your dreams O years, how they penetrate through me! (I
know
not whether I sleep or wake;)
The perform'd America and Europe grow dim, retiring in
shadow
behind me,
The unperform'd, more gigantic than ever, advance,
advance upon
me.

“These tools … were not created in America, but in Israel, still another Homeland, enforcing the longest ‘occupation’ in modern history. Thus, the citizens of Minnesota have, as American taxpayers, subsidized an occupation overseas that is effectively a laboratory for their own.”
Many Americans horrified by The Homeland's agents rampaging through whole communities, seizing children, perp-walking half-naked old men, and detaining whoever they feel like, with or without charges, all while enjoying "absolute immunity" have settled on an interesting term: "eccupation." This designation is as correct as it is unoriginal—a fact more Americans would do well to remember.
ICE has contracted surveillance tools that, according to Joseph Cox at 404 Media, allow it to "track phones without a warrant and follow their owners home or to their employer." These tools, reportedly deployed across Minneapolis, were not created in America, but in Israel, still another Homeland, enforcing the longest
"occupation" in modern history. Thus, the citizens of Minnesota have, as American taxpayers, subsidized an occupation overseas that is effectively a laboratory for their own.

Wasow’s study supports the use of nonviolent direct action during the civil rights movement, a protest technique that King favored for both moral and STRATEGIC reasons. Excerpt from a paper by me (currently under peer review):
King knew that tension fostered by nonviolent protest often provokes from oppressive systems the very reactions that protesters seek to dramatize. The predictable backlash to nonviolent direct action is a strategic advantage for protesters, drawing attention to the conditions in need of change, but only when
protesters do not retaliate and return violence with violence. Quoting Gandhi, King
(1958) said, "suffering is infinitely more powerful than the law of the jungle for converting the opponent and opening his ears which are otherwise shut to the voice of reason" (p. 92).

Alaska State Troopers in Fairbanks killed a suicidal man having a mental health crisis.
Troopers said they determined that Rexford was experiencing "mental health issues" and expressed a desired to harm himself after
speaking with present family members and Rexford.

As troopers discussed the situation with Rexford, he suddenly went into the kitchen, grabbed a knife and charged at a trooper with the weapon, officials said.

Multiple troopers then shot and killed Rexford, according to the statement.

Another man inside the home was seriously injured by the gunfire, according to troopers.
