enjoyed The Mermaid Mask enough to use every single permitted character gassing it up to Nintendo (there's nothing super special about this version but PSA: the Switch 2 is a really really good fit for this game, it's technically undemanding (mostly) and mouse mode is perfectly suited)

in post-closing, here are some custom Creator Studio icons by Elías of macosicons.com. these are shown in dark mode so that's bad but already you can see how they adapt detailed designs into glass layers and made it all look good. [intoning with exactly correct amount of irony] Apple hire this man

Custom icons for various Creator Studio apps. They still have some abstraction but show recognisably detailed objects. Pages is clearly a (good) pen. Pixelmator is clearly a brush and (colourful) paint. Motion is clearly a gyroscope. Mainstage is clearly a lead guitarist performing on stage. Etc.

in closing, never forget this banger. i fully believe they could make a really nice liquid glass icon that fully evokes that original ink pot and fountain pen icon for Pages. but they haven't yet

the Creator Studio icons are definitely the worst though. i wasn't a huge fan of Final Cut's clapperboard forced into the squircle shape but it worked. the new one just looks like nothing. some of these look like something, but most just don't read as the things they need to read as

Apple's Creator Studio and iWork app icons before and after Liquid Glass. The old icons were blunt but unmistakeably depict objects related to their function. The new ones are blobs that vaguely resemble objects.

i will never use the Clear look and don't understand why anyone would but i will say that these icons annoy me less in total monochrome than they do in dark mode. it *is* good that the icons are still clear in monochrome, for both style and accessibility... i just wouldn't use it unless i *had* to

The icons are still distinct and discernible in monochrome even if some details are lost. I think they are also nicer and more readable in monochrome than they are with coloured icons inside black squares.

i *don't* like the dark mode icons, because even as a perma-dark user i think icons should be vibrant and distinct and the differently coloured squares counts for a lot of niceness. this would work much better without the squircles... but, well, that ship has long since sailed, hasn't it.

Apple's dark mode app icons don't look bad on their own but having a collection of black squares looks monotonous even when those black squares contain distinct things.

to be honest, i actually really like most of Apple's Liquid Glass icons. i think many of them strike a really good balance between being abstracted glass blobs and having exactly enough detail and definition to actually look like whatever the thing is they're trying to evoke

Apple's icons for Maps, Passwords, Weather, Wallet, Apple Store, Files, Books, Stocks and Camera are examples of icons that keep to the Liquid Glass aesthetic while still looking enough like their real world basis to evoke them. EG, the Passwords icon is clearly a set of three keys that even all look different.

i think it's very funny that Pages was a terminal casualty of Apple's Liquid Glass Icon Massacre while Preview was a survivor

Apple's liquid glass app icon for Pages is an abstract monochrome blob that vaguely resembles a pencil drawing a line but you wouldn't know that's what it was if this was your first time seeing it and you didn't have this alt text. It looks awful. Meanwhile, their icon for Preview shows a fully detailed and coloured magnifying glass while still holding true to the liquid glass aesthetic and having a restrained colour palette. It looks nice.
