Personally, I’ve found the vibrancy of the color to more be an indicator of age. The more vibrant the fresher! See two nearby ones — the faded one was more eaten up and felt more dry/flaky

Holy crap Maui is so dramatic. This is the site of an early Hawaiian village. Highly recommend this three mile loop walk through time if you are ever here - Waihe’e Coastal Refuge.
