What's infuriating is the butterfly effect of this scandal is such that no punishment seems sufficient and all punishment feels meaningless. You can't give back what was taken. I don't know what the punishment should be but in my less charitable moments, I say expulsion from the whole thing

I think Graham has it exactly right, that the revelation isn't about punishment but transparency. To Jacob's credit, he owned up to it and made no excuses. But people who consume his content and collaborate with him deserve a chance to know who it is they're associating with.
