From 2024 via NZZ:

(They seem to refer to bike infra completely level with sidewalks as bike lanes to, though I definitely agree those all definitely feel more like bike paths than bike lanes regardless of en/de (Rad(fahr)streifen vs Radweg))

Visible homelessness seems to have decreased *a lot* since 2024, especially on transit, including large underground stations (all still without faregates, as they should be, although they sadly seem to be launching a faregate pilot)

Downtown Edmonton seems to be in a bad state (lots of vacancies, low foot traffic), but at least the LRT is doing really well? Great ridership even on a Sunday (3-car trains!), and stations and vehicles all in near-flawless condition

Best part about the Canadian is you've got the dome car to yourself from 19:30 because everyone on board is over 70 (Less great part is our 18:50 Edmonton arrival turned into a midnight one since we're currently 5 hrs late)

Rule bloat here takes many forms – another favorite is the incomprehensible patchwork of 'leash optional' and 'leash required' path segments eg in Vancouver's (stunningly beautiful!) Capilano River Regional Park, which, despite very extensive signage all over the park, saw little compliance

BC Transit are masters of the north american art of 'spending money on fare enforcement without effectively enforcing fares at all': They're sending uniformed staff onboard busses to check fares, but they just openly *never* issue fines even to those caught repeatedly www.bctransit.com/fare-aware/
Fare checks are underway
Uniformed Transit Supervisors check fares visually and with a digital handheld device. If asked, please be courteous when presenting your proof of payment. Riders who are found travelling without paying a fare or using ineligible fare products will be informed of payment information and concession fare product eligibility
requirements. Fare evasion may result in the deletion of misused fare products without refund, fare account suspension, or restrictions on travel privileges.

While urban/regional transit here seems to be very frequent on several routes, public intercity transport is virtually nonexistent – Vancouver is about an hour away, yet only connected to Squamish by infrequent private busses (a lot like Calgary+Edmonton)
