#F1 bargeboard complexity peaked in 2021: here's Newey's 2021 Red Bull in the special white livery used in Turkey! Due to this complexity, following the car in front was a NIGHTMARE! Things improved massively the following year, with the start of the ground-effect era

F2 cars run a 3400cc turbocharged V6, producing ~620hp at 8700rpm It has therefore way less power than the combined ICE + ERS power of an F1 engine, but it's still more powerful than F1's ICE. And, once the battery runs dry, F1 cars are left with the ICE only!

"GP2 Engine"? Alonso would happily make the switch, as the Formula 2 cars were WAY FASTER in the speed trap than he was! 🤯 In FP1, F2s already hit a 322 km/h MEDIAN top speed, which was higher than the HIGHEST (321) reached by both Astons during the GP! [Via JMP #YesJMPCan #adv]

Bearman reached 350 km/h during the Baku GP, the highest of any driver!🚀 Similar top speed to the one at the start of the ground effect era (351), but far below what BEA himself hit last year (361) RUS reached 329 with NO OVERTAKE MODE OR SLIPSTREAM! ANT hit the highest average top speed (343) #F1

-PIA was only marginally quicker than LEC before the lockup, and struggled afterwards -BEA was the best midfielder pace-wise, yet LIN finished in front of both Haas -William's pace was terrible: SAI was helped by the SC, then he 'survived' long enough to score points!

RACE PACE (Impacted by traffic ⚠️) -RUS had the best pace on track, but VER spent the whole race behind PIA and RUS! Mercedes likely had the upper hand, yet RBR performed brilliantly here -Ferrari was way back: LEC 0.66 s/lap slower than RUS despite also running in free air for most of the race

Here's a question: can we still call it "F1" (or even "motorsport") when a ~1000 hp car stays flat-out for 600m and barely gains any speed by the end? 😢

BEST SECTORS LEC did well by almost matching RUS in sector 1, but his best sector 2 was still 4 tenths away of Russell's McL was next quickest in S2, Alpine (Mercedes PU) in S3 (where McL still struggled despite having the same PU)

Formula Data Analysis @fdataanalysis.bsky.social · 25/09/2026
MINISECTOR ANALYSIS Mercedes does seem to have excellent aerodynamic efficiency, in addition to very high power: PIA (same power unit) had a better exit out of T16, yet RUS easily reached and surpassed his speed, gaining throughout the straight
0112
Formula Data Analysis @fdataanalysis.bsky.social · 25/09/2026
RUS was fastest in every sector, had by far the best top speed (331 km/h, vs just 322 km/h for "best ICE" RBR and 321 km/h for RBs, same as Aston), and had no shortage of energy: he crossed the line 16 km/h faster than he was at the start of the lap
082
Formula Data Analysis @fdataanalysis.bsky.social · 25/09/2026
Mercedes smashed everyone's championship hopes by taking pole by 0.837s: LEC (P2) was way closer to P9 (-0.684s) than to RUS! 🤯 And that's on the 15th quali of the season, despite significant upgrades from the other teams ANT will overtake everyone but RUS

This debunks a lasting myth: that one #F1 manufacturer (RBPT?) can have the best ICE but not the best ERS. Ferrari's upgraded ICE made their clipping vastly better, which is exactly what you'd expect, since all energy comes from the ICE anyway! What’s your opinion?
0120
Formula Data Analysis @fdataanalysis.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
So it's confirmed: Ferrari's 'ADUO 2' upgrade (which only HAM had in Madrid) was significant, providing 18hp more in some crucial phases (peak power on corner exit, between 260-310 km/h, in the clipping area) and similar performance elsewhere 🚀

Sainz (and Williams) had the best starts this season! 🚀 2026 #F1 START ANALYSIS - Key Points: -Williams and McLaren had the best starts; Aston and Audi the worst. Ferrari lost its start advantage... -HAM made the quickest start: 4.45s to 200km/h in Madrid! -RUS had the worst: 6.85s in Hungary

PIA and HAM had the best starts, yet their race turned into a nightmare: 2.4s to reach 100 km/h, just 4.5s in total to reach 200 km/h. PIA was on Hards, making this result even more impressive! Aston and Audi were the worst cars off the line by far: something to improve on

🟧NOR had the best RACE PACE at the SpanishGP (0.24s/lap quicker than 🟩 ANT, 0.41s/lap quicker than 🟦 VER): from a likely win to P3 due to extremely unlucky VSC timing 🟥LEC's pace was within 0.1s of 🟦 VER's, yet he finished the race 24.8s behind him! What a pity, replacing Spa with this track ☹️

Ferrari's ADUO 1 upgrade was worth ~7hp, making this second upgrade TWICE as effective. That would put them ~20hp behind Mercedes, down from ~45hp at the start of the season!

Formula Data Analysis @fdataanalysis.bsky.social · 11/09/2026
Ferrari's ADUO 2 #F1 engine upgrade, introduced at Monza, is worth ~15hp based on my calculations! 📈 OCO ran the standard engine, BEA the upgraded one In quali, BEA accelerated harder at EVERY SPEED: 15.4hp required to explain that gap

A solid power unit didn't guarantee success, though: Williams still ran a Mercedes PU, and yet lost 3.9s to last year!

Formula Data Analysis @fdataanalysis.bsky.social · 09/09/2026
Monza Quali really did expose the limitations of the new Power Units ⚠️ The average team lost ~3s to 2025 Having a powerful PU was critical: -Alpine switched from Renault to Mercedes, losing less than 1.8s/lap. -Aston went from Mercedes to Honda, losing more than triple that!

RACE PACE No car could match Mercedes on pace, even after correcting for Antonelli's extra set of tyres! -NOR was next fastest, P8 → P4 -VER and HAM had similar pace; HAM's clash with LEC likely cost him points -Alpine best of the rest -Cadillac worst by far [Via JMP #YesJMPCan]

The longer the straights, the more "diluted" the ERS deployment must be, since a given amount of energy must cover a greater distance 🪫
072
Formula Data Analysis @fdataanalysis.bsky.social · 06/09/2026
These rules are a total paradox: for the first time in motorsport history, longer straights can mean lower top speeds ⚠️ Top speed in Monza was "just" 351 km/h, 6 km/h less than at the low-speed Hungaroring! Read on 👇

🟪 GAS vs 🟩 RUS vs 🟧 PIA RUS was quickest for over half the lap, yet GAS beat him to pole despite only being quickest in T4-5 (Seconda Variante), before T8 (Ascari), and right before T11 (Parabolica). He was rarely fastest, but never slow: consistency got him on pole!

QUALI ANALYSIS 24 km/h between Russell (343 km/h) and Alonso (319 km/h): not reaching 320 km/h AT MONZA, despite active aero, says a lot about Honda's still-lacking power Highest top speeds → best performance (GAS, RUS front row)

Formula Data Analysis @fdataanalysis.bsky.social · 05/09/2026
Considering each team's best FP3 lap, the cars running the updated Ferrari engine (BEA's Haas and HAM's Ferrari) had the highest top speed. Qualifying will give a clearer picture, but this is the first time this has happened this season! Aston will struggle despite the updates #F1 #ItalianGP
083
Formula Data Analysis @fdataanalysis.bsky.social · 04/09/2026
Still, a big step forward! Ferrari's deployment strategy seems excellent (LEC's top speed is less variable from straight to straight, minimising the parasitic drag force). However, they still need to make more deployment compromises than Mercedes. Let's see in quali with full power!
092
Formula Data Analysis @fdataanalysis.bsky.social · 04/09/2026
Ferrari's new "ADUO 2" engine is powerful, but it still lacks breath compared to the Mercedes PU: • Similar peak power (🟢Arrows: similar early-straight acceleration) • Deployment lasts less, resulting in 🟡lower mid-straight speed

Any exhaust wing will produce more downforce and drag, and likely less power. This new version, being less extreme, should mitigate these characteristics
062
Formula Data Analysis @fdataanalysis.bsky.social · 03/09/2026
Two reasons why it might be introduced at Monza: 1) Track characteristics (drag and power are paramount here) 2) The ADUO 2 engine introduced at this race Reason 1 is likely the main driver. If it’s still used at the next race too, that would confirm reason 2 as well!

Ferrari has radically updated its exhaust wing 🛠️ It now covers a much smaller area, both laterally (red arrows) and at the centre (yellow arrow) The wing generates rear downforce at the cost of more drag and less power. [📸: @carpentiers_f1 on X] #F1

Notice that the power figures for all teams are a bit higher than FIA's prediction for 2026 Anyway, this does impact the results: what matters is each PU's power difference with respect to the others

Reaction times increase with age... except for Alonso, who was quickest off the line in Zandvoort at 45 years old! Even Lindblad, just 19, was slower RUS was worst off the line: high RPM sent the rears spinning, costing him a place to ANT HAM lifted to avoid rear-ending LEC! #F1
