✍️ SIGN THE PETITION: Ban native forest logging and scrap dodgy offsets
The NSW Government has finally agreed to protect 176,000 hectares of forest and create the Great Koala National Park – a habitat for koalas and 66 other threatened species. But there's a catch. Under...

The surgical mask shown in this article will do almost nothing to reduce particulate inhalation because it's just a splash guard. Wear a well-fitted respirator N95 or better

for that reason alone if not on NIP (like it is for >75) then it should be subsidised. Dementia prevalence is so high we should be doing everything to reduce the risk

What’s the matter with people? There are hardly any ON politicians. It takes time to figure out what’s going on and how to help. It would be total chaos if they governed.

Many infectious diseases present with similar symptoms and may take a few days or longer before additional symptoms indicate the cause or lab tests confirm/refute your hypothesis. Hence HCW benefit from N95- to prevent infection to themselves and prevent transmission to other patients, relatives etc

A thread on why the WHO's resurrection of a need for close contact as a condition for infections to transmit is a relapse into a Medieval model of contagionism long discredited by Koch.

There was an ancient debate over the origin of epidemics between miasmatists (non-contagious bad air arising in the environment) vs contagionists (infectious spread person-to-person). The scientific debate is over, but the political grounds driving the polarisation remain alive today. 🧵

It’s odd why medicine doesn’t get the engineering principles behind respiratory protective equipment. “But there’s no RCT to prove the predictions made by aerosol physics have clinical impact”.

Hopefully someone’s going to write it all up at the end of this. Of course 3 deaths means missing pieces very likely but those in the ship will surely be able to outline basic history

OUR NEW BMJ editorial: Andes virus should reset WHO’s default approach to airborne risk. 🧵 1/ For severe pathogens with person-to-person transmission, the starting point should be precautionary airborne protections — not waiting for definitive proof after spread occurs. www.bmj.com/content/393/...

One hopes so but doesn’t mean they could contact all. We haven’t been told. And Doesn’t mean they are taking precautions or being tested. Some may not even be in a place where they can be tested

Viral load unlikely to be the determining factor-it will be the virus virulence and other factors that determine transmissibility. We have a lot to learn but failure to use precautionary principle yet again will be the downfall.nice paper from 2018 showed h2h and airborne. So obvious not rats on ship
000
Frances Daily @fdaily.bsky.social · 06/05/2026
Transmission is airborne as was Covid (despite the droplet dogma). Incubation period is long. More cases will follow on the boat- including pre and asymptomatic who can also pass it on.
100
Frances Daily @fdaily.bsky.social · 06/05/2026
Well let’s hope they did. They should. The consequences can be far reaching as we now see. And have ship’s ventilation improved since Covid? Maybe not with multiple cases. Seems we learnt very little from Covid and airborne pathogens. Dogma has to change. Washing hands is insufficient!

It seems a long time between index case falling ill, dying, his wife being ill and then sending specimens.Do cruises have strict guidelines regarding infectious diseases? Seems not. Presumably they have rapid tests for common infections but if negative, specimens should be sent off for rarer things

Unless they wear N95 and clean the air it may continue to spread.
