Future Cleantech Architects @fcafuturecleantech.bsky.social · 08/10/2026📊 This chart compares cost pathways for hydrogen-based and alternative technologies in fertilizer, steel, shipping and aviation. It shows how plasma nitrogen fixation, electrochemical ironmaking, and battery or nuclear shipping could approach cost parity with fossil-based routes. 110
Future Cleantech Architects @fcafuturecleantech.bsky.social · 06/10/2026Several high-emitting sectors of the economy are, or will be, dependent on hydrogen. Considering that clean hydrogen will remain scarce & expensive for decades to come, the refining and fertilizer sectors should have priority access to clean hydrogen before introducing it into additional sectors. 110
Future Cleantech Architects @fcafuturecleantech.bsky.social · 06/10/2026#Europe needs targets for cleaner industry. Should hydrogen volumes remain the measure of success? Our new Standpoint proposes replacing overarching hydrogen-volume targets with sector-specific decarbonization targets. 151
Future Cleantech Architects @fcafuturecleantech.bsky.social · 05/10/2026Trade adds another layer of vulnerability. ≈30% of the EU 🇪🇺 nitrogen fertilizer consumption is imported, with ≈70% of those imports coming from Egypt 🇪🇬, Russia 🇷🇺 and Algeria 🇩🇿 African countries import over 60% of their fertilizers overall. 110
Future Cleantech Architects @fcafuturecleantech.bsky.social · 05/10/2026Why is gas such a vulnerability? Natural gas can account for up to 90% of the variable cost of ammonia production. Wholesale gas prices rose tenfold in 2022 and remain around 160% above the average before Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. 110
Future Cleantech Architects @fcafuturecleantech.bsky.social · 05/10/2026Nitrogen fertilizers account for 2.5% of global emissions. Around 40% comes from production, where natural gas and coal are used as feedstocks. The other 60% comes from potent greenhouse gases released after fertilizers are applied to fields. 110
Future Cleantech Architects @fcafuturecleantech.bsky.social · 05/10/2026Fertilizers help feed ≈half the world’s population. But nitrogen fertilizer production is still closely tied to fossil fuels and volatile gas markets. Ahead of an event with UN University Vice-Rectorate in Europe about a clean & resilient system on Oct. 12 in Brussels, here are the key findings🧵 121
Future Cleantech Architects @fcafuturecleantech.bsky.social · 02/10/2026The session was co-led by Pauline Leroi and Patrick Cummins-Tripodi, with contributions from Marlène Siméon and Magnolia Tovar. Thank you to all participants for the thoughtful discussion. Stay tuned for our upcoming factsheet on shipping decarbonization! 020
Future Cleantech Architects @fcafuturecleantech.bsky.social · 02/10/2026Coffee & Cleantech in Brussels on Decarbonizing Shipping 🚢 Our briefing for policymakers focused on one of transport’s hardest-to-abate sectors: shipping. The global merchant fleet has ≈116,000 vessels of at least 100 gross tons. The challenge: they still run almost entirely on fossil fuels. 131
