Thinking about the colors and backdrops in 'Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma', it looked like Bertrand Mandico, even Guy Maddin. Can't believe this style of film might break through!

I also watched it for the first time recently. I think part of what makes it so distinctive is the lack of feminism. Not as in, it's anti-feminist, but that nobody in the film knows this set of tools that would actually really help make sense of things.

If there’s one thing to take from ‘Game of Thrones’, it’s that elite squabbles that seem minor, even a bit silly, might eventually end in death for everyone. Like a Storm of Swords, you might say.

Every DFW novel begins this way, with more or less complete chaos. Whereas even someone like Thomas Pynchon carefully creates his complexity, DFW throws you into the ocean, and you’d better learn to swim. You might say he writes in a time (the nineties) where postmodern chaos is taken for granted.

Dunkirk is top 3! The movie where Nolan realised he could take his style - intercutting / interlocking everything, smother it in strings - and use it on basically every story, including corny old war movies. It’s gorgeous, stylistically fun, and full of feels. When Nimrod hits at the end :(

Apart from the fact that this looks awful, it of course shows the just four songs of the Odyssey that depicts all the travels. An accurate version of The Odyssey would have Odysseus arrive at Ithaca halfway through, and have, like, 15 minutes of him doing sports with the Phaeacians.

And the Paraguayan War, and the Indian Mutiny, and the European stretch of violence from the Revolutions of 1848, past the Crimean and Prussian Wars, to the Paris Commune. Basically the entire world had a collapse into violence between 1845-1870, for seemingly unrelated reasons…

An important part of it is also that both Ned and Robb also break the norms of Westeros, though mostly because they do what they think is right. It’s not easy being ‘good’ in Westeros. But in the books, it’s not easy being ‘evil’ either, and later seasons of the show loses that.
130
Frederik Bové @fbbove.bsky.social · 19/07/2026
Admittedly, it’s also in the show, but yeah, everyone knows executing Ned is not just evil, but a mistake, and when Joffrey does it anyway, it provokes a devastating civil war.

It’s also one of the differences between the ASOIAF books - where choosing to break the rules always has negative consequences- and the GoT show, where it mostly seems like a cheat code.

A lot of culture, from The Godfather to Breaking Bad and Game of Thrones, says that too. I’ve never understood how Michael Corleone is supposed to be able to assassinate all his enemies all of a sudden, but it’s presented as if it’s just because he has chosen evil.

Even though she went form 29,5 to 21,9, she would have won the biggest landslide ever if it was first past the post, though: upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/co... I mean, she's definitely lost support, but she's managed to split the opposition, so that they can't defeat her. She's a good politician.

Or put another way, the reason Biden, Macron, Starmer, Merz are so hated might be because they are stubborn and can’t course correct. And for some reason, a lot of countries put really stubborn centrists into office over the last few years, and they’ve basically all failed.
000
Frederik Bové @fbbove.bsky.social · 22/06/2026
But is that really predictive? Mette Frederiksen just won her third term in office, even though she’s made pretty much every ‘mistake’ in the book. I’m not the biggest fan, but she does something different, and I think it’s that she’s flexible.

Fun thing about Julia Ducournau: She uses the same names again and again. In 'Raw', the main character has two friends: Alexia and Adrien. In 'Titane', Alexia changes her identity into Adrien. And in 'Alpha', Adrien is the name of the love interest, though the main character is called Alpha.

My kid got a Bluey set for his three year birthday, from his granddad, who loves Lego too. There’s Lego for everyone. But there’s absolutely more from movies that were big thirty years ago, and I miss the fun little Castle or Pirate sets.

The rose in the wind screen, given 'for the audience' is one of the most beautiful symbols in cinema this century. Where little art bothers to use images that are explicitly symbolic.

'Taxi Teheran' (rewatched yesterday) is one of three Jafar Panahi films that I think will be on my personal top hundred - along with 'The Mirror' and 'Closed Curtains'. He has made so many defiant films, but the playfulness here makes it one of my favorites. www.youtube.com/watch?v=If0K...

Watched ‘The Man from London’ yesterday, and honestly thought it was a pretty rough watch, but a few shots had the usual Tarr magic. Especially this one, where the play with light and darkness is incredible. The closing of the window at the end is a Wow moment. m.youtube.com/watch?v=qCWH...

Watched 'Sirât' the other night, and the ending really sticks with you. Underrated reason: The music sounding like some kind of 'ascension' theme from a computer game. Really underlines the idea that they are walking a bridge between heaven and hell. Somehow makes everything harder to watch.

‘Since 1979’ should be too wrong even for the opinion pages. Until 1988 Iran was literally fighting off an invasion by Iraq. That’s like saying the Soviet Union was the biggest aggressor in Eastern Europe in the 40’s.

There’s a sort of explanation in the books, which is that the Fire & Blood books is supposed to have been written by a historian during ASOIAF, who doesn’t seem like he cares that much if society was fundamentally different back then. But the TV show drops all of that.

At least in Denmark, the far right is under attack for supporting Trump earlier, backtracking and admitting they were wrong, and joining everyone else in being pissed. I don't think this helps them.

There's a good recent novel on the underground communist anti-japanese resistance in Korea before the war: Mater 2-10 by Hwang Sok-yong, and the actual task was to last 24 hours before you broke, and very few did, and a lot of them died right after. State repression works. At least for a while.

I was thinking the same thing about music. Every technological advance always somehow leads to great weird new music, but AI? In three years it’s just slop and cheap soundalikes. It’s like there’s something distinctively uncreative about it.

#Palmesøndag: Min serie om Catherine Corsini kulminerer med 'Homecoming'. En film der på virkelig moderne vis skildrer køn, seksualitet, klasse, hudfarve, ja sågar Paris vs periferi! Men filmen druknede i skandale.
