yeah I'm in a similar place. I like the broad strokes of his stories but for many of his works I definitely feel the "this was written for a newspaper and he was paid by the word" sort of feel.

There's a spider that's really testing my limits on not wanting to hurt spiders. Huge cat faced orb weaver has been hanging out in my garage. I've left it alone cause it's not hurting anyone. I'm not "weeping with fear" of spiders but I prefer they stay out of leaping distance. It laid eggs...

It's already pretty hand holdy! They explicitly state [z] has been helping overnight, so at least 10 hours. It shows the streets were abandoned. You dont need a scene of it happening if you can at least believe a character can carry someone for roughly 4 miles in a few hours.
