“trustless economy” “no need for a trusted third-party” same guys:
OpenAI boss says world ‘right to be afraid’ but should trust AI firms. Sam Altman and other tech CEOs say there are incentives to limit advancements in AI, as fears grow over the threats it poses to humanity.

this, forever
Update, 7/31: We know that people uniquely trust Google Earth for a reliable view of the world. We’ve seen geospatial professionals using this feature for a range of useful purposes, however we’ve also seen people sharing screenshots of generated imagery that appear to violate our policies. So we’re rolling back this feature in Google Earth while we work on implementing stronger guardrails. It's important to note that generated images didn’t appear in the main Google Earth experience for others to see and were watermarked as AI generated.

lol remember this
two twitter threads

first:
1. Sam Altman: "ChatGPT launched on wednesday. today it crossed 1 million users!"
2. Elon Musk: "What's the average cost per chat?"
3. Sam Altman: "average is probably single-digits cents per chat; trying to figure out more precisely and also how we can optimize it"

second:
1. Chief Disruptor: "Will it be FREE forever?"
2. Sam Altman: "we will have to monetize it somehow at some point; the compute costs are eye-watering"

always blame the computer dl.acm.org/doi/10.1145/...
One observation made during those tests later proved to be a key idea. A lay person trying a system for the first time is probably feeling pretty stupid and thinks that any mistake is his or her own. His inclination is not to tell you what is difficult because he thinks it is his problem. It is important to keep emphasizing that if he is hav~ng a problem, it is not his but the computer's. If you get into a car, turn the wheel, and it steers about twice as far as you expect, it is not that you are an incompetent driver, it's because the car has oversteer.

This is a deliberative problem unlike deliberative problems of the past. In the past, deliberation led to decisions about means to be employed in given circumstances to achieve given and desired ends. Means were deliberated, but the circumstances and ends were not subject to deliberation. Today, deliberation is inverted. The computer provides new means — the means are given by technological development — but the circumstances and ends of computer use are, themselves, the subject of deliberation in the process of product development. This is a fundamental characteristic of our time, and it profoundly influences the development of human-computer communication.

> we intentionally avoid association with channels whose content could distract from our message and divide our community is a weird way to say you fucking hate nazis
Proton_Team posts on reddit: " You're right to raise this, and we want to address it directly and provide you important context on how this happened.

Vincent Lapierre's channel should never have been part of our affiliate and sponsorship program, because we intentionally avoid association with channels whose content could distract from our message and divide our community.

Proton operates globally, and while our services are available to everyone regardless of political views and our mission is consistent everywhere, our knowledge of every local media landscape is not. In this case, our team didn't have enough context about the French space to make a well-informed decision, and that's on us.

We also want to be straight about what a placement like this is and isn't. An affiliate or sponsorship arrangement is a transactional placement for awareness, not an endorsement of a creator's views. In the case of Vincent Lapierre, this was a single video sponsorship, not a partnership.

But that distinction doesn't excuse what happened here. The responsibility to vet who we put our name next to is ours, and we didn't meet it this time. We're now reviewing our vetting process and our guidelines for our marketing agencies to ensure this doesn't happen again.

If you see something like this again, tell us. We rely on your feedback and vigilance. "

Mark Zuckerberg providing a great demonstration of anti-design here (from mastodon: neuromatch.social/@jonny/11663...)
@jonny@neuromatch.social posts on mastodon: "Zuck, 2026 Q1 earnings call: "our plan is to make an AI that's really good at shopping" with an image of text which reads "But I don’t hear any other labs out there talking about how they’re building an AI that’s really good at shopping. And I think that the reason for that is like not because shopping is the most important thing by itself, but because like empowering people to do the things that matter in their lives, whether that’s local or understanding social context, or shopping or personal health things or understanding what’s going on around them visually which is going to be really important on the glasses. These are all elements of the personal super intelligence vision."

After the initial joke wore off, people realized they were essentially buying... well, a rock in a box, and the Pet Rock began to lose its luster. Complicating matters were Dahl's investors, who felt their earlier compensations were inadequate and took their partner to court. Dahl had to pay his investors big.

“If you’ve trawled the comments as I have on any AI films that have launched recently, there are a lot of people saying, ‘I hate AI’”

“We intentionally went in with: ‘this is AI’ — unashamedly,” he added.

Rather than try to mitigate that response, the team proactively leaned into the expected backlash by building a layer of reactive content designed to engage with it directly.

This included developing a series of GIFs and a suite of social media responses. For example, if a user comments, “I hate AI,” the response might read: “Hate spreads fast. Gonorrhoea spreads faster.”

found a scrivener draft from 2019 and I've been banging on about the same shit for too long
The problem with potential is that there is no guarantee of anything to back it. The maker of a potentialful product benefits by avoiding any public assertion of a concrete purpose for it. We’re left with digital things that bombard us with properties that distract us from existing specialised products that do exactly what we need or from the fact that those specialised products don’t exist, despite their being a discernible need for them.

For at present, becoming an automaton nearly guarantees that you will be left out to dry, as the promise of so-called AI is that the more you use it, the more it uses you. Such that in the act of becoming automatons, we bring ourselves that much closer to the thing we really fear: being left alone, without any of the care or materials we need to survive. We give up our individual selves for the appearance of security, without any of the conditions that can actually create it.

a while back, when React was growing its roots into the front-end web ecosystem, there was this seminal article "The Great Divide" which inadvertently illustrated the tension between those who cared about what they were making and those that didn't (archive.is/vliMl)
On one side, an army of developers whose interests, responsibilities, and skill sets are heavily revolved around JavaScript.
On the other, an army of developers whose interests, responsibilities, and skill sets are focused on other areas of the front end, like HTML, CSS, design, interaction, patterns, accessibility, etc.
