Together, these studies suggest that the link between music and cognition may not be linear or universal, but critically dependent on individual rhythmic capacities. Really happy to have worked on these ideas over the years with @pripolles.bsky.social @fherlizcano.bsky.social

This framework can naturally generate both positive and null findings across studies — without assuming that the literature is inconsistent or flawed. A few years later, we provided behavioral evidence supporting this proposal. www.nature.com/articles/s44...

Rhythmic skills mediate the link between music training and cognition via attention and phonological processing - Communications Psychology
Rhythmic ability enhances attention and phonological processing only after surpassing a specific threshold; beyond this point, additional improvements confer no further benefit. This thresholded relat...

In this paper, we proposed a theoretical explanation: musical training may only benefit cognition once rhythmic abilities cross a critical threshold. journals.plos.org/plosbiology/...

Keeping time: How musical training may boost cognition
The relationship between musical training and intellect is controversial. This Perspective discusses a new hypothesis that may help to resolve the debate by explaining how training in rhythmic skills ...

Why is the literature relating music and cognition so contradictory? Some studies report strong cognitive advantages associated with musical training, while others find weak or null effects. How can both be true?

Phonological processing = left dorsal stream? Not in Mexican Spanish-speaking children at reading onset. Here, bilateral ventral — not dorsal— pathways predict phonological awareness. Neuroscience should broaden the populations it studies to build generalizable brain models. doi.org/10.1162/NOL....

Bilateral ventral pathways support phonological awareness at reading onset in Spanish-speaking children
Abstract. Reading is a fundamental human skill that has been widely studied. While substantial progress has been made in identifying the white matter pathways supporting reading in adults, less is kno...
