Can confirm that tax in Spain on 25-35k is hugely higher than UK. Same story for e.g Germany too

It's in the phrasing of the question - they're probably mostly reckoning they've been "unfriendly" rather than the enemy. Still ridiculous I know.

Whether that stance is a necessary measure to bring home the benefits of a functioning social welfare system or is instead strangling businesses in costs and red tape....probably a bit of both I guess.

Fair, that is the key divide I've seen between UK and Spain so far. The UK generally trusts and spot checks whilst Spain demands payment in advance and brings out the rubber gloves for a thorough inspection regardless.

Assume you mean unprofitable? Anyway, the problem is that fledgling young businesses often run by young people don't necessarily have the resilience that some businesses might to cope with that hopefully short term situation. They are given 1-2 years at reduced rates, but then that's it.

It's not for the money, that's for sure.

That's an interesting graph, and yeah that's why in our unusual circumstances it stings. The UK is unusually generous with low earners and Spain is unusually harsh. The same pain also applies with the other half of our equation - taxes on wealth. You may at this point ask why we're moving to Spain

Yes, a portion of their tax is a social security payment which you pay every month as a self employed person even if your income one month is zero. I think it's about 300 euros a month People really hate that, and for good reason.

We're moving to Spain shortly, and a £25k income attracts about £5000 additional tax there. They have possibly gone too far in the other direction for modest wages, but there is certainly a heck of a lot of room in the middle there.

People in the comments to this are really sleeping on T212 for spending abroad. Better rates than revolut and 1.5% cashback.

Revolut really does carry quite the vibe when it comes to FT articles about it. It kind of feels like they're trying to tell us something but can't just come out and say it.

Further to this, the UK already has one of the very lowest tax takes from the lowest paid of any developed country, and also one of the very highest minimum wages. Why are we pretending otherwise?

So the solutions to our country's perilous financial position were obvious all along - give out financial freebies, increase defence spending, and then lower taxes too. I just can't imagine why Starmer's Government didn't try that.

For clarity, I am referring to the large portion of ABC1 households who will not be poor, not everyone. Chill.

72% of ABC1 people are not poor is my point.

Far_Wide @farwide.bsky.social · 23/07/2026
I think you're missing the point there that those in higher groups with higher levels of wealth already *still* chose the far far worse value option en masse.

yeah, I can see us beating Argentina but in my heart of hearts neither of these. Both teams play with a quickness I've not seen England be able to do. (Personally think ITV are being harsh on how France are playing btw)
010
Far_Wide @farwide.bsky.social · 14/07/2026
I think they (ITV) are overstating how badly France are playing. That penalty was fortunate and France still look always just a moment away from scoring.

All I got with making that point is along the lines of "We're underdogs anyway, we need every advantage we can get"

Through that lens you can start to see why so many of them are more than willing to tolerate all sorts of law breaking, because it benefits them and therefore must be OK. Where that takes us, I really don't like to think about much.

From my discussions with Americans yesterday, I think it's more than this. Many of them don't even understand why this was a problem. They've achieved a 'win' because they're 'stronger', and so there can't really be a problem with that.

Yes I wasn't expecting them to win this one based on form, but maybe this shitshow will inspire them.

I have a feeling the tobacco industry has been dead against the vast majority of changes made to their industry in the UK. This is not a thing that necessarily matters.

What I find most incredible really is the lack of deftness. No smart touches, no technically-they're-allowed fine points, just out and out corruption.

And if that's not enough, England Spain and France should too. Then maybe USA can win a World cup just as meaningful as the FIFA peace prize

God, this smells dreadful.

Far_Wide @farwide.bsky.social · 06/07/2026
I agree. I'm pretty damn cynical but if the team that played Croatia and Mexico turn up, they can win literally any game potentially. France and probably Spain are still superior on paper, but I honestly wouldn't be shocked to see this team beat them.

I get that it's just second guessing words, but conjuring additions to pictures just to gaslight me? It's bizarre.

I once asked it to prove to me that some accommodation had an electric stove that it was insisting it had by sending me a photo of the kitchen. So it sent me a photo of the kitchen, which had no stove. I said "where exactly is the stove here?" It drew another picture and added one in itself.

I've no idea of the law, but I'd personally say that if it isn't a law for elected politicians and their staff to not bet on political markets, then it should be.

so why do various sports organisations have firm rules against players betting on the leagues they're playing in, whether it be snooker or football?

Yes it's the too expensive thing which I think is likely to be the case, much to the detriment of my and everyone else's defined contribution pension.

i'm modifying my portfolio now and have just about landed on 65/20/10/5 stocks/bonds/cash(MMF)/gold, with half of the bonds inflation linked. I need to actually buy the bonds now, but really don't want to because they look like a terrible buy. Which historically means I should get on with it.

Far_Wide @farwide.bsky.social · 12/06/2026
My cheery take is to remember that sometimes there is no great answer out there. 2022-2023: stocks fell >20% in real terms, gold fell, bonds fell, cash hammered by inflation of course. There just wasn't really a decent answer that wasn't basically gambling.
