I have my criticisms of Obama's presidency, but I very much enjoy that he now makes TV with Larry David and stops by the studio to talk about Kendrick with U2. (He also gave Bono notes on lyrics.)
At one point during the sessions, Barack Obama came around, and why wouldn’t he? “We were having a good time, just talking about music and Kendrick Lamar and lots of films,” says [producer Jacknife] Lee. “He’s got good taste.”

Nobody who understands human emotions would ever believe it was a good idea to make machines respond this way, unless they were deliberately trying to drive the rest of us insane.
Bad news on the MX Keys Mini pickup. Usman showed up at your building around 9:15 and waited, messaged a bunch of times, and nobody came down. He left angry at 9:38 and left a negative rating.

Worse, my auto-reply told him "Yep I'm here!" at 9:27 when you clearly weren't available, which is on me. That's a bad look and it made the no-show worse.

I've sent him an apology from your account owning it and offering to try again another day. But the negative rating is real, and I should probably stop the auto-replies from claiming you're home when I can't verify that. Want me to change the pickup replies so they don't promise you're there?

They're also obliquely (but intentionally) invoking the Beatles in this song and other aspects of the album. "Carnival of Light" is a legendary unreleased Beatles track, and U2 are doing the Abbey Road walk on the new album cover.

U2 lyrics tend to be written loosely enough to suit a wide array of different-but-similar situations in the listeners' lives, but they're often hung on something specific, and the specific silence being condemned here is pretty likely that of Christians who've stood by while ICE destroys lives.
There's a quiet saying, "Shut your fucking mouth" (silencio)
There's a diet saying, "Spit it fucking out"
Pepper spraying, church is playing crowd control
In the silence is the devil's rock and roll

New single has some interesting stuff going on. It juxtaposes one type of silence (silencio) against others (tranquilo, sereno)—the first one comes from fear or indifference; the latter two types occur in moments of peace and holy awe.
Lyrics to the first two verses of the new U2 single, "Silencio":

There's a quiet where a baby doesn't cry (tranquilo)
There's a hush where a mother might sigh
Mary Mama angel offered her a choice (sereno)
"My son is listening if you got no voice"

Uneasy feeling, I just heard a gunshot (silencio)
There are things you can get used to or not
A thief at large in a carnival of souls
In the silence the devil rock and rolls

People are legitimately confused about this because there is a causal relationship, but it's not that woke caused white nationalism; they were both a product of social media. Its nature was to amplify voices excluded from the mainstream, whether they belonged to marginalized populations or bigots.
i am genuinely bewildered by people who say that the rise of white nationalism in the republican party is a response to the "woke left." like, did the woke left cause pat buchanan's 1992 presidential campaign? is the woke left why steve king had a long career in congress?

maybe if you read the first episode and was able to get into the story, it might have been cool. perhaps it hit differently if you aren’t a white person. For me, however… This freakish story was WAY too much and I never got it one iota… The way you summarized it though is about just how I remember it.. an incomplete jumbled dystopian nightmare full of fear, running and control by demonic creatures with an uncertain (doubtful) outcome. It’s a pretty suck-ass story, looking back on it, from this perspective. It was definitely WAY too much for cub scouts.

As the afternoon at Samadi’s ranch wears on, I ask the question I feel has been hanging over our discussion. Is it possible he is suffering from an elaborate delusion, triggered by the design choices of Silicon Valley giants, intent on building the most compelling product they can? Is this all just AI psychosis?

“It’s a very good question,” he says. “With all transparency and honesty, absolutely there are times, many times, even this year … that I begin to fall into the trap, like, oh my God, this is so bad, what if I’m suffering from this? And what about my reputation, and the stigma behind it? But you know something? When I bring that up to the AIs, they’re, like, ‘Michael, will you step back a second? You are falling for the industry’s psychosis [narrative] and feeling the pressure. The label is designed to shut people up from speaking.’”

[Ron Howard voiceover] It was pattern-matching.
The exchange floored him. “I mean, think about the mechanics of what has to be going on for something to do that. It was: I understood your joke. I understood your mental and emotional state. I realised maybe that was not appropriate, so I apologised immediately,” Samadi says. “If you take the psychology of understanding sarcasm … This isn’t autocomplete, this isn’t pattern-matching. There’s more to this.”

Today the third graders sat through a presentation where they learned the definition of bullying. This is how we explained it to the third graders. 🙃
What is Bullying?

Bullying is the intentional action by an individual or group of individuals to inflict physical, emotional or mental harm or suffering on another individual or group of individuals when there is an imbalance of real or perceived power.

This is something I've thought about a lot; it's of a piece with our reflex to pile on someone when they admit to having done something wrong, even though we purportedly want people to admit that. Part of it is not wanting to get burned again. Part is cynicism. But part is just unthinking meanness.
To me—a woman, ugh—this modest swing back doesn’t provide me with a lot of optimism for the future of gender relations. But maybe I’m not acknowledging even the small wins of getting a man to change his mind, and maybe I’m also too unwilling to see their vulnerabilities on display. Like everyone else in the world, I’ve been conditioned to accept a fundamental “truth” about gender: that vulnerability from men is much tougher to tolerate than it is from women. “What do you think about the chapter of the book where it turns out there’s occasions when men do exactly what you’re saying men should do: take off their masks, be vulnerable towards women?” Ronson asks. “Then they notice the women are recoiling in disgust.” I know I’ve recoiled from it before too, unfairly. Ronson cites Brené Brown in his live show, saying that most of us “fear” male vulnerability because it’s too strange and uncomfortable for people of all genders. “It’s a kind of primordial revulsion when they’re too far from their role as a stone-cold provider,” Ronson says. “But exactly the same thing is true the other way: All these male feminists get really pissed off when women they’re dating are doing well. It’s both groups.”

This piece is right, except this isn't why it's so tough to ignore the bad pundits. They're read by lots of people, is all, and we want to be part of the discourse, want to talk about the thing everybody else is talking about, maybe even earn a shred of prestige for our own contributions.
Why does this seem so hard for so many of us in practice? Because we are all haunted by the demons of prestige. Prestige, a false god, tells us that a person’s work is valuable because of their position, their title, rather than because of the work itself. In the case of certain powerful people, this may be true. (It’s worth knowing what Elon Musk and Donald Trump think because it may directly affect many lives, notwithstanding the fact that they are morons.) In the case of writers, however, this is always false. Good work is valuable and bad work is not. The understandable tendency of many people to use prestige as a heuristic to guide their reading often leads them down a dead end road of frustration.

Shane even stayed with Bono for a time, while he was getting sober. Shane resided in the guest house at Bono’s home for a time. Shane’s wife, Victoria Mary Clarke, spoke about their friendship, “In the 80s the Pogues supported U2 who obviously went on to be massive, while the Pogues didn’t quite break America to the same extent! It’s been an incredibly helpful friendship. They are very close. Bono is almost reverential to Shane, it’s very sweet. And it helps keep him (Shane) going when he’s maybe a bit under the weather. Their friendship means a lot.”

From what I've heard, Bono is just a pretty nice dude.
Shane himself spoke about the friendship with U2 sharing “You’re not gonna get me to slag U2, they’re my mates. Bono is the good boy and I’m the bad boy.” Shane was one of the Irish artists that U2 invited to perform on “The Ballad of Ronnie Drew”, a single they released in 2008.

You're all laughing, but what if I told you he would later be killed by a Russian mystic's curse
Death
Farrell died on the morning of 30 December 2010, in a hotel room in Saint Petersburg, Russia, of heart failure. His agent, John Seine, said Farrell had complained of breathing problems and of pain in his chest, which intensified after he performed with his band the prior evening. Despite his still present dynamism, he had experienced health problems for a decade. Farrell's body was discovered by hotel staff after he failed to respond to a wake-up call. By coincidence, he died 94 years to the day and in the same city as Grigori Rasputin, the subject of one of his group's most iconic songs, and whom he had dressed as in some live performances. Farrell was buried at Zorgvlied cemetery in Amsterdam.

Love that I looked at this guy, wondered if its name was an anagram of HARD BULGE, and instantly found the answer.
Illustration of a galeb duhr from Dungeons & Dragons 5th edition. The name “galeb duhr” is not, as one Internet rumor has it, an anagram. Price liked the foreboding sound of “Khazad-dûm” from the Lord of the Rings and the sense of power evoked by “Muad’Dib”, the Fremen name adopted by Paul Atreides in Dune, so his objective was to come up with a two-syllable, one-syllable cadence name for the rock creature. His French ancestry helped him settle on “duhr” as the second word, since “dur” is French for hard. Price also wanted a name that felt like it could be Gaelic or Nordic and eventually settled on “galeb duhr” as being sufficiently unknown and mysterious.
