The Honeyberry blossoms survived the frost a few weeks ago and are now loaded with fruit. Also called “Haskaps”, they are extremely cold-hearty here in #Zone5b and not as fussy as blueberries. Maintenance free, actually…I don’t even water them. #LoniceraCaerulea #ForestGarden #PlantOnceEatForever

Turkish Rocket is ready! It’s an edible perennial in the brassica (mustard/cabbage) family. Sauté the florets up like broccoli rabe (the best part) but the entire plant is edible and will feed you for decades. #PlantOnceEatForever #BuniasOrientalis #EdiblePerennials

I don’t know anything about mushrooms, but these are popping up everywhere in the mulch after a good two-day rain soak. 🍄‍🟫 PictureThis plant app says it’s Strophariaceae. Google says it’s Agrocybe praecox. Cute either way.

I had high hopes for these honeyberries (Lonicera caerulea) this year (I still do!). It’s an extremely cold hardy plant and the blossoms are frost-tolerant but it went well below freezing last night. This is the first year that they’ve flowered…I hope they still make fruit! #PlantOnceEatForever

Goodbye 2nd Spring, hello 3rd winter. Woke up to 28°f and snow this morning in Central NY. This Garden Sorrel (Rumex acetosa) is an heirloom French herb with a tangy, acidic, sour-lemony flavor. Comes back year after year. Free food. #WildFood #EdibleForestGarden #PlantOnceEatForever #EatTheWeeds

Fiddlehead season is now upon us! And it happened in the blink of eye. A couple of days ago they were just poking up through the mulch, but with all of the rain and the sunshine they are now well on their way to unfurling. Time for the yearly sauté. #SpringForaging #EdibleForestGarden

I love looking back at old posts and comparing when plants started popping up in the Spring in previous years. This Lovage (Levisticum officinale) patch is right on schedule. Lovage will grow to 6 feet tall and tastes just like celery (but way more flavorful and way more intense).

My backyard this morning. New York State Canal Corporation is doing a bang-up job managing the water levels as usual. 🙄 In their defense, it’s difficult to manage climate change and these intense rainfall events are only going to get worse. Another 40 feet and it will be at my back steps.

I don’t have the ambition (or the equipment) to remove this stump so now it’s a ‘raised bed’ planter filled with Calendula. 🤣🌼 The leaves and petals are both edible and it’s a prolific self-seeder so it’ll be here every year till this stump rots to the ground. I think it’ll look cool.
