Oddity (2024) is a supernatural horror movie with a simple plot (that never slips into cliches) and extremely well-executed tension and scares. It’s creepy and esoteric, with delightful and harrowing patience with its scares.
The movie poster for Oddity (2024) is almost completely dark except for the title. Floating in the dark is a young white woman with platinum-blonde hair in a blue dress with her arms outstretched. Reflected in the exact same pose underneath her is a horrible shadowy puppet-figure with its mouth stretched wide in a scream.

My new Swarmweaver deck made an absolute MOUNTAIN of bugs! First time playing paper Magic in months and months 🥰
Four paper decks for Magic the Gathering lie on a table around a haphazard pile of poorly hand-drawn tokens for food, insects, Daleks, angels, and more. The commanders for the decks are: The Swarmweaver, Licia Sanguine Tribune, Rocco Street Chef, and Narci Fable Singer.

Caveat is a creepy horror movie with a claustrophobic setting that captures the same feeling as a survival horror game. It answers the most pressing elements of its mystery, but leaves the rest up to the audience's imagination after a chilling climax.
The movie poster for Caveat (2020) is entirely black, with the looming face of a ratty bunny-like toy in the bottom right corner. The bunny's eyes are wet and look awfully human. The title of the movie is scratched onto the black background as if with smudged chalk.

Red Rooms (2023) is a horror movie that comments on obsession, true crime, the internet, society, and more. The atmosphere and performances slowly ratchet the tension to unbearable levels. A bleak, multi-faceted, and riveting movie that defies easy answers and begs thought-provoking questions.
The movie poster for Red Rooms (2023) depicts a white woman whose dark hair is partially obscuring her face turning to look at the viewer while a glitching digital effect slightly distorts the rest of the poster. The poster is in black-and-white except for the bold, glowing red letters of the movie's title.

Yesterday I watched all 3 of the 28 /// Later movies! The original is a classic banger, followed by a fun zombie movie but nothing special, and the new one is WEIRD. Still not entirely sure how I feel about it, to be honest. My usual reviews below! I'm very curious to hear what other people think!

Bring Her Back (2025) is an atmospheric supernatural horror movie that grabbed me quickly and held me ruthlessly captive. The filming style and acting is spectacular; I was totally enthralled while the awful horrors of its eerie and occult story unfolded.
The movie poster of Bring Her Back depicts a young boy, his eyes uncanny marbles swirling with blood and other color, looking upwards at someone out of frame. A hand descends from above, putting their thumb on his shaved head such that we can see the chipped purple nail polish on the finger. A halo of smeared blood is behind the boy's head. The image has a very unsettling feeling.

Invasive (2024) is a cat-and-mouse style reverse-home invasion movie with a plot structure and story that will be familiar to horror fans. However, don’t let that dissuade you: Invasive has incredible pacing, protagonists with pathos, and an overall very modern feel that I enjoyed immensely!
The movie poster for Invasive (2024) depicts a close-up on the face of a frightened young Black woman cast partly in shadow. She's looking upward at something out of frame and her brow is furrowed with tension.

Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust (2000) is an animated science fantasy horror movie that is packed to the brim with high-octane action and visually stunning tableaus in a pulpy, enticing post-apocalyptic setting.
The broody, gothic watercolor poster for Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust (2000) is almost entirely black-and-white with little pops of color to emphasize the contrast. It depicts the brooding figure of the titular D, tall and beautiful with pale skin wielding a long sword and wearing his iconic broad-brimmed hat and black cloak. A single cross-shaped tombstone stands in the background and bats flutter in a messy swoop around his head. The "t" in "Vampire Hunter" is stylized as a massive Catholic cross.

Last Night in Soho (2021) is a flashy supernatural horror movie that hardcore genre fans will find somewhat predictable, but it is exciting and stylish. The themes on belonging and nostalgia are a little shallow, but the performances and fantastic and there are some really cool visuals.
The watercolor poster for Last Night in Soho depicts a blonde white woman with bright red lips in a pink jacket looking over her shoulder at the viewer. Emerging from the bright reds to her right is a young man in a suit while the blue on her left feels rainy and drab, capturing a young woman looking shocked as a young man looks on in surprise.

Dead Talents Society (2024) is a vivacious and refreshing horror-comedy. What starts as comedic worldbuilding about the afterlife develops into a grounded examination of family, celebrity, capitalism, and achievement. I highly recommend checking it out while it's on Netflix!
The graphic movie poster for "Dead Talents Society" shows a pale woman in a bloody schoolgirl uniform attempting to raise her arms to "frighten" the viewer, but a passerby's hair is wafting in the way, blocking out her mouth and torso.

The Clown in a Cornfield movie didn't really hit for me, so instead of reviewing it I HIGHLY recommend you go pick up the novel! It's by Adam Cesare and is a love letter to slashers that does its own thing w/ a great cast of modern characters. I can't wait to get my hands on the sequel!
The cover of Clown in a Cornfield by Adam Cesare depicts a farm doused in the light of a red moon. The corn rises in the outline of a grinning, malevolent clown's face with a big round nose and expressive eyebrows. It reads "the kids are not all right."

1408 (2007) is a psychological horror movie about a writer being tormented by an evil hotel room. It’s a dramatic, entertaining, and VERY Stephen King-y flick that sneaks in some pretty good scares and genuinely creepy moments among its bigger, more emotional themes.
The movie poster for 1408 depicts two men's faces peering out of bloodstained grime, divided in half by an old-fashioned and ominous key emblazoned with the movie's title.

Sinners (2025) is a supernatural action horror movie set in the 1930s American South and packed with gorgeous visuals, fantastic dialogue, and great characters. It is spectacular entertainment from top to bottom and explores themes on belonging, race, music, and more. This was fucking CINEMA!
The movie poster for Sinners depicts an ensemble cast of characters in 1930s garb in various emotional states ranging from calm and serious to laughing and enraged over a burning barn surrounded by dark figures. Above this is a pair of twin brothers, one dressed in a dapper suit and grinning at the viewer, while the other looks stoically down the barrel of a gun. The entire poster is cast in the dark reds, oranges, and yellows of a setting sun.

The Church (1989) is a supernatural horror movie that has a few great ideas and fantastical visuals, but they are buried in a muddy narrative. I really wanted to like this for the physical effects alone, but it had absolutely no stakes and barely any story.
The movie poster for The Church (1989) depicts a gothic cathedral besides skyscrapers, towering over the viewer. Bright light and mist emanates from the church's open doors to silhouette a person. It reads "You haven't got a prayer."

The Stylist (2020) is a killer POV movie (like Maniac or Peeping Tom). It has pacing issues common with features derived from shorts, but it successfully develops an uneasy tone using a combination of gruesome violence and social discomfort to explore themes of belonging, identity, and loneliness.
The movie poster for The Stylist depicts a woman's face shrouded in blue light holding a pair of trimming scissors at eye level while bright red blood runs down the opposite side of her face at high contrast to the blue.

Cuckoo (2024) is a stylish supernatural horror movie about the unsettling goings-on at a remote German mountain resort. Although the pacing stumbles a bit, the movie takes huge, weird swings that are fresh and interesting!
The movie poster for Cuckoo shows a close-up of a young woman's face looking back at the camera with a startled, somewhat wide-eyed expression. Blood trickles into her forehead from a bandage wrapped around her forehead which spells out the movie's name in dried crimson.

Where the Devil Roams (2023) is a supernatural horror movie set in Depression-era America. Although it is beautifully made for its budget and the creative team shows serious artistic chops, the story meanders quite a bit and I struggled to make much thematic sense of its bits and pieces.
The movie poster for Where the Devil Roams is a black-and-white photograph of a broken porcelain doll resting besides a pair of scissors on a black background.

I brewed up a (pretty bad) Mindskinner deck in Arena. It’s SO COOL, but just not very strong. I’m going to try dropping some of the tempo stuff for high-power fliers and evasive creatures! Anybody have card recs for this one (beyond the obvious mill stuff)?
The Mind Skinner is a Magic the Gathering card from the Duskmourne set. It’s a 10-1 Legendary Enchantment Creature - Nightmare that costs three blue. It has “The Mindskinner can’t be blocked. If a source you control would deal damage to an opponent, prevent that damage and each opponent mills that many cards.”

The Ruins (2008) is a horror movie that uses the structure of a single-location slasher movie and the tropes of a creature feature to produce a lean and mean movie that is perfect for a gross and gory movie night!
The movie poster for The Ruins (2008) depicts a hand desperately reaching for the cloudy, stormy sky as it bursts free of a seething mass of flowering vines.

Never Hike Alone (2017) is a Friday the 13th fan movie that is a strong showing and pretty impressive for a crowd-funded independent project. It’s super short, fast-paced, and full of loving homage to the original franchise that I love so much! 7/10
The movie poster for Never Hike Alone (2017) is a beautiful painting of a man standing on a rocky outcropping overlooking a blue-grey lake while the towering spectre of hockey-masked Jason Vorhees towers in the background against a black sky.

Slugs (1988) is an absolutely ridiculous Piranhas-style creature feature that makes for a fun and absolutely ludicrous movie night. Just turn off your brain and watch as the horniest small town in middle America are devoured by mutant slugs. CW movie poster including blood!
The movie poster for Slugs (1988) depicts a man in green coveralls in front of a gray brick wall. The man is screaming and tearing open his shirt to reveal slugs feasting on his face and chest, revealing exposed bone.

The Monkey (2025) is a bleak and outrageous horror-comedy that contrasts its shocking, impossible kills with the removed and particular filmmaking style that has become associated with Osgood Perkins. It’s over-the-top and unpredictable with a thin plot and an off-the-wall sense of humor.
The movie poster for The Monkey (2025) is completely black except for the bottom right corner, where a grimacing toy monkey emerges from the shadows with realistic, shiny teeth in its wide mouth.

Your Monster (2024) is a romantic comedy and horror movie that’s pretty light on the horror and heavy on the humor. I found it charming and very entertaining, with a surprising layer of additional thematic depth to the story.
The movie poster for Your Monster (2024) is a cutesy close-up of two hands forming a heart shape: one human stained with blood but cute pink-painted fingernails and the other monstrous and hairy with claws.

The Damned (2024) is an atmospheric period horror movie that builds creeping dread punctuated by well-done scares. Despite that, I wanted more from the story. It just didn’t compel me personally, but it is beautifully made and I think fans of period horror should definitely give it a try!
The movie poster for The Damned (2024) shows a woman in dark clothes walking on icy ground perforated by striking red wooden graves in the shape of the cross.

Wicked City (1987) is an animated neo-noir horror movie that features beautiful old school animation, exciting action, and cool monsters. HOWEVER it is also extremely gross in its treatment of women and SO preoccupied with being lecherous that it fails to deliver much beyond a boilerplate plot.
The movie poster for Wicked City depicts an animated man in a black suit wielding a gun determinedly staring at the viewer through a bullet hole while surrounded by uncanny monsters. In the background hovering over him is the face of a red-eyed woman and a hazy city at night.

Heart Eyes (2025) is a horror-comedy that blends slasher and romcom tropes. I normally bounce off of horror-comedies, but it is funny, charming, and had fantastic (gross and gory) kills. It's a loving homage to the Scream clone that does its own thing and it was a BLAST in the theater.
The movie poster for Heart Eyes (2025) shows the head of a masked killer emerging menacingly from the dark, their leather mask only partially illuminated by the glowing red heart-shaped eyeholes in the mask.

The Night of the Hunter (1955) is a black-and-white horror movie that examines religion, childhood, greed, and the nature of mankind. It is an extremely fast-paced and stylishly made movie that has clearly rippled forward to inspire horror directors in every decade since.
The movie poster for The Night of the Hunter is in stark black-and-white, depicting a girl holding a yarn doll sitting in a man's lap. The man is wearing an old-fashioned suit and his face is in shadow, while the girl's is illuminated in a wash of light.

Thoroughbreds (2017) is an understated horror movie that delicately unfurls a fascinating relationship between two young women. It is funny, smart, and chilling in its portrayal of upper class America; the performances are magnetic.
The movie poster for Thoroughbreds (2017) is cut in two. In the upper half, two young women look at the viewer from a shocking block of orange-pink sunset color, while the lower half depicts a sprawling country manor on a manicured lawn.

Late Night with the Devil (2024) is a supernatural horror movie mimicking a 70s talk show. It doesn’t take big swings, the found-footage aspect is forced (who is filming them during ad breaks?), and it used AI to make its ugly interstitials, but watching the chaos unfold has its moments.
The movie poster for Late Night with the Devil (2023) depicts a man in a tan suit and wearing a striped tie reaching out as if for a handshake but his head is completely engulfed in flames so that you can't see his head or his face.
