Merlin's actually by a decent way the best of the trio in FMW because she's one of only two characters that have an area-effect Power boost ability.

It's official: Starbucks is gutting DEI policies company-wide to curry favor with Florida politicians as our union's call for a boycott grows. Vote with your dollar. BOYCOTT STARBUCKS.
Fox News headline: Starbucks agrees to DEI overhaul after blockbuster Florida legal showdown. The coffee giant will pay $1M and submit annual compliance certifications for four years under the agreement

Yeah sure, bare minimum is bad, but we're talking about an admin that is killing fucking hitler numbers of people right now, and directly messing with democracy, are you REALLY sure you wanna gamble on how democrat strategists will interpret your protest in the face of that?

I'm not saying don't let perfect be the enemy of good. In this case of this hypothetical Dem, I'm saying don't let perfect be the enemy of EVER GETTING TO VOTE AGAIN. The supreme court just stopped Trump messing with the postal vote by a *single* judge margin. You wanna let them pick another judge?

Not going the way of labour means holding the democrats to account when they get into power, if they enact terrible policies. With labour the left kept the party unelectable until they decided "fuck the left", lurched to the right then won a massive landslide.

If you wanna say that Rowling is rich as fuck already and your individual $ will make little difference that's your argument. Not that I agree with that either. But you can't buy absolution with transphobia offsets.

If a few million dollars of lobbying buys legislation to ban trans people from public spaces or remove them from their jobs, a few million on Ko-Fi will not cover the damage. Bullets are a few cents each. Bullet proof vests are not.

I'm not going to go into this in detail but this is a weak argument. Money spent to cause harm is not merely 1:1 countered by money spent to oppose it.

So, I think you can try to read into it real world parallels, Rorschach-like, but what Omelas really is IMO is LeGuin's attempt to generate her platonic ideal of an utopian tale.

Fangz @fangz.bsky.social · 11/08/2026
The intentional imperfection makes Omelas not a dead end, but a process, a signpost to somewhere else. It means WE are the ones who "walk away", in that we are meant to reject imperfect visions and imagine new ones, somewhere off the map, someplace over the horizon.

Fangz @fangz.bsky.social · 11/08/2026
The essay came after, but is I think developing the same idea. The necessity of the Omelas child is not an in universe necessity. It's actually a philosophical necessity - all fictional utopias, including one that is *specifically designed to be objectively better than reality* must be imperfect.
Every utopia since Utopia has also been, clearly or obscurely, actually or possibly, in the author’s or in the readers’ judgment, both a good place and a bad one. Every eutopia contains a dystopia, every dystopia contains a eutopia.

In the yang-yin symbol each half contains within it a portion of the other, signifying their complete interdependence and continual intermutability. The figure is static, but each half contains the seed of transformation. The symbol represents not a stasis but a process.

IMO the story is intentionally dream-like and ambiguous. But also I actually disagree with most readings. I think what the story of Omelas is really about is a meta-narrative about the concept of Utopia in literature. It's deeply tied to this essay: www.ursulakleguin.com/blog/97-utop...

The sentence itself, its use and popularity, bothers me even more. Indifference to what words actually say; willingness to accept a vapid truism as a useful, even revelatory concept; carelessness about where a supposed quotation comes from—that’s all part of what I like least about the Internet. A “blah blah blah, who cares, information is what I want it to be” attitude—a lazy-mindedness that degrades both language and thought.

But deeper than that lies my aversion to what the sentence says to me: that only the child is alive and creative—so that to grow up is to die.

To respect and cherish the freshness of perception and the vast, polymorphous potentialities of childhood is one thing. But to say that we experience true being only in childhood and that creativity is an infantile function—that’s something else.

I keep meeting this devaluation of growing up in fiction, and also in the cult of the Inner Child. The cult of the Inner Child tends to oversimplify what Wordsworth leaves complex, close off what he leaves open, and make oppositions where there are none. The child is good—therefore the adult is bad. Being a kid is great—so growing up is the pits.

Sure enough, growing up isn’t easy. As soon as they can toddle, babies are bound to toddle into trouble. Wordsworth had no illusions about that: “Shades of the prison-house begin to close/upon the growing Boy . . .” The transition to adulthood, adolescence, is difficult and dangerous, recognized as such by many cultures—all too often in punitive ways such as cruel male initiation rites, or the brutal eradication of adolescence in girls by marrying them off as soon as they menstruate.

I see children as unfinished beings who have been given a very large job to do. Their job is to become complete, to fulfill their potential: to grow up. Most of them want to do this job and try their level best to do it. All of them need adult help in doing it. This help is called “teaching.”

Teaching can of course go wrong, be restrictive, not educative, be stultifying, cruel. Everything we do can be done wrong. But to dismiss teaching as a mere repression of childish spontaneity is a monstrous injustice to every patient parent and teacher in the world since the Old Stone Age, and denies both children’s right to grow up and their elders’ responsibility to help them do so.Children are by nature, by necessity, irresponsible, and irresponsibility in them, as in puppies or kittens, is part of their charm. Carried into adulthood it becomes a dire practical and ethical failing. Uncontrolled spontaneity wastes itself. Ignorance isn’t wisdom. Innocence is wisdom only of the spirit. We can and do all learn from children, all through our life; but “become as little children” is a spiritual counsel, not an intellectual, practical, or ethical one.

In order to see that our emperors have no clothes on, do we really have to wait for a child to say so? Or even worse, wait for somebody’s Inner Brat to pipe up? If so, we’re in for a lot of nude politicians.

You asked "Sure because taking someone completely awful in just because they have a party label that matches is a good idea, right?" If you are asking this question then we are past the point of deciding candidates. Yes, it sucks when a bad candidate gets picked. But it's too late.

They don't always vote with the republicans. Manchin voted with the democrats 70% of the time and agreed with the heritage foundation position 11% of the time. His replacement, republican Jim Justice, agrees with the heritage foundation 94% of the time.

Fangz @fangz.bsky.social · 02/06/2026
The worst democrat is better than the best republican. More democratic senators means less reliance on getting 100% of dems in congress to agree and so less influence for the worst ones. It's that simple.

Personally I hold the very unpopular opinion that the majority of works are both conservative and progressive.
010
Fangz @fangz.bsky.social · 31/05/2026
Oh yes. The corollary is that the revolutionary who *does* read a lot, or the conservative with similar hobbies, tends to have the opposite position.
110
Fangz @fangz.bsky.social · 31/05/2026
I dunno, I feel that kind of sentiment speaks more of the speaker and their criteria than the subject. A hardcore revolutionary that doesn't read much would definitely think that. A conservative that doesn't read much would similarly see subversion everywhere.

So IMO, the clear path forward is for Coco to continue & renew the progressive revolution the Pact represented (that is, a shift from a patronage based system to witches as effectively an independent civil service), to which regressive forces like the Brimhats must lie inevitably in opposition.
100
Fangz @fangz.bsky.social · 02/05/2026
Meanwhile, the whole point of folks like Coco is that they adhere to the spirit of the Principles (Magic is to make everyone happy) while not being unnecessarily bound by the letter of the rules.

Fangz @fangz.bsky.social · 02/05/2026
I think the silverwoods they were given were customised by the brimhats somehow.
000
Fangz @fangz.bsky.social · 02/05/2026
There's a sharp distinction between the Brim footsoldiers like Custas and Innia who get monkey-paw spells and compliant bracelets, and the Brim leadership who muse "why can't we use subjugation magic?" and switch the shapes of their hats freely, and create disasters they can be the cures to.
200
Fangz @fangz.bsky.social · 02/05/2026
The reality is that the class divide always existed (see e.g. Romonon) and if anything appears lesser post-Pact than pre-Pact. The Brims, despite their propaganda, actually represent the witch upper class and want to shed the notion of responsibility the Pact represents.
200
Fangz @fangz.bsky.social · 02/05/2026
What I mean is that the actual solution the story points to seems to be that the pointed hats aren't *going far enough*. They aren't living up to their duty of being responsible dispensers of magic.
200
Fangz @fangz.bsky.social · 02/05/2026
So overall I think magic as the tool of a witch civil service is probably the best outcome. An ink-based economy just isn't workable.
010
Fangz @fangz.bsky.social · 02/05/2026
This can't scale to everyone getting enough ink though. Generally silverwood is probably something that inherently promotes inequality - the fact that silverwood requires comfort to grow means the badly off are gonna get screwed.
200
Fangz @fangz.bsky.social · 02/05/2026
There probably is a decent way of making silverwood trees. If humans are required you can get enough trees through using it as e.g. euthanasia for elderly witches that feel they've accomplished all they wanted.
100
Fangz @fangz.bsky.social · 02/05/2026
I don't really consider the brimhats the antidote to the pointed hats, the brimhats are more like the concentration of the worst aspects of the witches, the aspects the better pointies shy away. The brimhats are witch MAGA, basically. There's an assumed equivalence that doesn't actually exist.

Fangz @fangz.bsky.social · 25/04/2026
Maybe it's just magic. I can imagine clothes with spells where if you squeeze some bits together it completes the ring and opens up the outfit.

The latter might sound kind of silly to us in the modern day but there was a whole three way conversation between the US, Germany and the UK over what exactly is permissible with the new submarine warfare. The rules were kinda being figured out in the real time.

Fangz @fangz.bsky.social · 01/04/2026
It's more complicated than that. Switching to convoys is not free. It takes effort to organise and slows down transport. It also harms Whitehall's diplomatic efforts - basically a ship in convoy with a military escort legally cedes its civilian status.
