bone of my bone - johanna van veen didn't really care for this one, the plot & characters both felt half-baked. very AO3 (derogatory). find it hilarious this has two separate trigger warnings for christianity, but absolutely no forewarning of the numerous explicit (if tamely written) sex scenes.

rebecca - daphne du maurier SO good. been vaguely on my to-read list for a while bc of the reputation, but i'd felt reluctant bc it's so often branded as a romance, when it's a v rich psychosexual bourgeois gender horror. daphne du maurier, i owe you an apology. i was not familiar with your game.

happy 9/11 to all who celebrate
a four panel haus of decline comic.

1) two women are talking. one says, "it's weird how 9/11 became a national holiday." the other responds, "oh no! that means..."

2) jack skellington, from the nightmare before christmas, approaches a door in a tree shaped like the twin towers

3) he steps into a plane full of panicked passengers, singing, "what's this?"

4) the plane flies towards the twin towers, still both intact. jack is still singing, "what's this?"

another cool thing we saw was the etruscan arch in perugia. built in the 3rd century BC, it was restored by augustus (yes, that one, the first roman emperor) in 40BC. you can still clearly read the inscription 'augusta perusia' above the arch. just incredibly cool to see something so old!!!
zoomed in shot of the etruscan arch in perugia, with the aforementioned inscription at the top of the arch. above the arc, in the wall above, are some decorative stones showing alternating circles and doric columns

when we were away, we visited a loom studio/museum. they still produce fabric on jacquard looms with punch cards in the afternoon, but in the morning the place is open to look around. so cool & interesting, & we got to see the looms in action, as well as fabric they'd woven.

you weren't meant to be human - andrew joseph white fell v flat for me. neither as gory nor body horror-y as anticipated. i feel like there's a bit of a trend in horror rn for authors to be working out their personal trauma in books, which makes for effective prose if you share that experience...

between two rivers - moudhy al-rashid i loved this! v strong narrative voice that i don't think will vibe with all. also not a comprehensive history of mesapotamia. but i found it a vibrant read that really touches on the marvel & confusion of studying the past. lowkey want to learn cuniform now.

the last song of penelope - claire north this final book in the trilogy felt a little more hemmed in by the source material, a little too stretched in the gap between the source text & the retelling. but still an entertaining read!

a short stay in hell - steven l peck guess this is what happens when someone with no interesting thoughts or emotions tries to write something deep & profound? find the praise for this absolutely baffling, i found it intensely flat & underdeveloped

a matter of death and life - andrey kurkov v short - i read this in about an hour while waiting for some painkillers to kick in. it was okay, tho the momentum of the story kind of sputters out in the final third. dark, detached, absurd, impersonal.

a beast slinks towards beijing - alice evelyn yang what if the real monster was the intergenerational trauma we endured along the way? found the start slow - the initial perspective character has a p detached voice, but it picks up. not a light read, esp the historical timelines

who's afraid of gender? - judith butler holy shit, a (relatively) accessible work by butler an overview of anti-gender discourse & its origins, w analysis that pushes deeper & in some interesting angles in places. not one for those who struggle with academic writing, but worth a read if you don't.

lucky day - chuck tingle struggled with the start, but felt it picked up about halfway through. this book is about nihilism & is almost as subtle as a sledgehammer, which... well, it's a tingler, so hardly unexpected, but a little heavy handed for me in places. still a fun, if gruesome, read

slaughterhouse five - kurt vonnegut a re-read. this time, i found myself feeling q sad that this implied notion that war is horrendous has just evaporated in recent years. i don't love this book, but i read it at such a formative time in my life that it always occupies a special place. so it goes

screenshot of the guardian politics live from 12:45, which reads "Keir Starmer refused to have a meeting with Wes Streeting after cabinet, Sam Coates from Sky News reports.

Wes Streeting tried to see Keir Starmer after cabinet.

But Starmer said in Cabinet that he won’t discuss the elections or his leadership, and that he will only speak to cabinet ministers about that individually.

Then after the meeting he refused to see Streeting one on one."

fundamentally - nussaibah younis there were parts of this that were kind of interesting, but overall the book felt undeveloped: it's aiming for complexity, but misses in the execution. the writing style was waaay too pulpy/wannabe edgy romcom for me, & it made the beginning especially a huge slog.

if you like roasted cauliflower & tahini, this is a great recipe (tho no zaatar. we use regular cauliflower, not just romanesco, & the pomegranate is optional but a delicious addition)
a recipe for roasted cauliflower with tahini and pomegranate.

ingredients:

cauliflower, cut into 5cm florets
olive oil
ground cumin
ground allspice
pomegranate seeds
sea salt & freshly cracked black pepper
tahini dressing (made from tahini, lemon juice, water & garlic)

method:

heat the oven to 200 celcius (180 fan/gas 6)

place the cauliflower florets on a baking tray. drizzle with olive oil, 1tsp each cumin & allspice, salt and pepper. cook for 20-30 minutes, until the cauliflower is tender but firm. leave to cool.

make the sauce, by whisking together 75g tahini, with 4tbsp lemon juice, 100ml water, and one crushed garlic clove.

once the cauliflower is room temp, dress with the sauce and pomegranate seeds.
