Then, she was gone. Austin couldn’t move. Alone with nothing but the distant hum of the city and quiet buzz of the pool filter, he could feel the spiral beginning. Guilt and humiliation roiled through him, 𝘴𝘵𝘶𝘱𝘪𝘥, 𝘴𝘵𝘶𝘱𝘪𝘥, 𝘴𝘵𝘶𝘱𝘪𝘥 beating a steady rhythm in his head. He’d ruined everything.

Elle wasn’t so slow to figure out what was happening. Without stopping to think, she was swimming furiously for the pool’s edge, hauling herself out of the water without glancing back. “Elle, I–” Austin stuttered. “I’ve gotta go. If Mom sees that I’m gone…” she mumbled, the portal already opening.

Austin had been staring for too long and he knew it, but he couldn’t look away; not even when her smile faded into something more questioning. He didn’t mean to. His gaze landed on her lips before the thought of kissing her could even cross his mind, leaning in before he realised he was doing it.

He got it. They were undeniably close, particularly since Elle had saved him from The Wraith, and there was no point in lying to himself and pretending that he didn’t find Elle pretty. Even now, or perhaps especially now, with no makeup, wet hair clinging to her skin… She was beautiful.

“You love me, really,” she chirped, smiling sweetly. “Nope.” Another lie. Of course he loved her, though not in the way everyone thought he did; the not-so-subtle glances in their direction when they sat together, the constant speculation from friends that their relationship was something more.

With frantic hands, he grasped at whatever he could, clawing at Elle’s shirt, his feet kicking out desperately in a silent plea to be freed. Austin coughed and spluttered as Elle wrenched him back to the surface. “Asshole,” he muttered, chuckling wryly now that he knew he wasn’t really drowning.

“You swear nothing else happened?” “Nothin’. Honest.” “Liar!” she squealed, her head thrown back with laughter as she dunked Austin under the water. It was just a joke; he knew that, but that didn’t stop the panic that flooded through him anyway.

Austin didn’t know why he left out the part about meeting Felix. He planned to tell her, hadn’t meant to leave it out, but the words stayed lodged in his throat. Elle wouldn’t care; if anything, she’d probably encourage him. Maybe that’s exactly why he didn’t say something.

He watched as they silently grew and the air tore apart. Through the void, a girl appeared; cackling and falling with such speed, it was clear she’d taken a running leap straight through the portal. “𝘊𝘈𝘕𝘕𝘖𝘕𝘉𝘈𝘓𝘓!” Elle screamed, shattering the peace, landing in the pool with a huge splash.

He grinned as he snapped a picture of the pool and sent it to her. A trip to Del Sol wasn’t hours trapped in the passenger seat of a truck for her; she could be there in no time– As if to prove his point, a cluster of lilac sparks began to swirl in mid-air, right above the water.

Sleep wasn’t finding him tonight. He rooted through his jeans pocket for the half-empty pack of cigarettes and a lighter and padded downstairs to the patio, firing off texts to Elle as he went. He wished she was with him. He wanted to tell her all about the concert, about Felix– She could portal.
