A rare #screenshotsaturday, working on SDF stuff for arrows between objects. #bevy #gamedev
Bezier curve signed distant field app including a texture image in the panel to the side and a display of points for that curve in world space.

It's not much but in my defence I was cross-referencing a bunch of disparate things in my codebase and listening to music more than I was programming. Anyway: archive filter. #screenshotsaturday #bevy

I banged my fist against my desk after this one and spent 5 minutes transcribing it to send to pals. thanks zizek.
transcribed section from Zizek's "Quantum History" sent to someone else via text: "recall pokemon go: a location-based AR game released in july 2016. Virtual creatures – pokemon – appear on the screen as if they were in the same real-world location as the player. This AR mode is what makes pokemon go different from other games. Instead of taking us out of the real world and drawing us into the artificial virtual space, it combines the two. We look at reality and interact with it through the fantasy frame of the digital screen, and this intermediary frame supplements reality with virtual elements that sustain our desire to participate in the game, push us to look for them in a reality that without this frame would leave us indifferent. Sounds familiar? Of course it does. What the technology of pokemon go externalises is simply the basic mechanism of Ideology."

The material difficulty is in ways to make behaviour of parent-child trees make sense once you have behaviour and state that is more than 2 layers deep. Earlier this month I was trying to get behaviour fit this kind of shape (red arrows denote "the source needs to make a change to the target":
A 3-layer parent-child hierarchy, with one parent root, 3 "div" children, each of those "div" children having one "logic" child themselves. There are red arrows from the leftmost and rightmost logic layer, and a red arrow from the parent root to the centre child in the logic layer.

#bevy #gamedev field notes 2026-01-09 I took about ~3 months off to focus on other work, and the state I left this in is a bit dire! I'm trying to set up a better "deckbuilder"/"card designer" UI, a bit closer to how other card game clients like MTGA etc. handle it.

This took far too long and broke too many things.
An object on the stack that says "Ability: Too many cards in hand. Choose cards to discard."

Spent 2 of the last 3 weeks fundamentally reworking the animation system in #rareepisteme and, it's not *great* now but it is now something that can be improved by changing how animations are fired, not something that's fundamentally broken and missing tons of information. #screenshotsaturday #bevy

Let's see if I can figure out a better way of telling people how many people are online and playing games before the next round of playtesting. Feels like a potential self-own, but also for an indie multiplayer game you need a bit of metrics to tell people if anyone else is online. #rareepisteme

#rareepisteme playtesting weekend has been, so far, a lovely success in terms of getting more feedback from more people. It's available to play right now in-browser at fallible.itch.io/rare-episteme! Sped up for the bluesky 3min video limit :) #screenshotsaturday #bevy #gamedev #indiedev #indietcg

Players are telling me the order in which things happen on the stack is unclear.
Three cards in a "stack" with a purple arrow that says "happens first" under the rightmost card.

Since the 0.15 RC dropped a few weeks ago I've been porting the client for the multiplayer card game I've been working on this year to Bevy, and in the last couple of days I've finally got enough functionality in it to actually play cards & see those cards resolve. #screenshotsaturday #bevy #gamedev

Closer still. These aren't "creatures" or "minions" they're just cards that are waiting on the server to get back to them on if they've been validated as played. #bevy #gamedev

More progress, just getting MVPs of various zones down so I can start working on more of the client functionality that actually gets me back to being able to "play the video game” #bevy #gamedev

Progress. This took me a week to get to this point. And a lot of notebook pages. No-editor really makes a lot of game development tedious and notebook-bound simply out of "to inspect this, you need to check your code” rather than “we have a tool that accumulates related data together” #bevy #gamedev
