You can't "correct" history. A substantial part of politics is in the ability to conceal any gap between rhetoric and actuality. Burnham is certainly fluent in the primary political languages of platitude and evasion, but he'd do better to minimise his reliance on these with an early election.

Badenoch wants to recreate a time she can't really remember whereas Burnham wants to get the 1980s- his own youth- right. Not sure who's going to seem the most nostalgic in three years time, especially if the current PM's gesture politics turns out to be more about feeling than effect.

Better to have a majority of 50 in 2027 than lose in 2029.

Nothing does more to put people off from voting Labour than the party being in government.

The media won with Starmer and failed with Tuchel. Let's see how they get on with this one.

In the context of an election campaign in 2029, either that may not matter at all or the gaps in her logic might not be any more substantial than what Burnham has to say to cover any distance between his preferred rhetoric and perceptions of how things have been under his premiership.

failuresuccedslike.bsky.social @failuresuccedslike.bsky.social · 07/10/2026
She just has to seem better than Andy Burnham, who might have three years of evasion, contradiction and underachievement behind him by them. Also she might seem less nostalgic, partly because she's younger, partly because he bangs on about going back so much of the time.

The most crucial thing about the next election is when it takes place. If it happens next year, Burnham gets back in with a smaller majority. In 2029 Badenoch would probably win.

failuresuccedslike.bsky.social @failuresuccedslike.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
There'll probably be a general election next year, unless Burnham has his heart set on losing in 2029. Just thought that Streeting would be the easiest target for Polanski, and therefore particularly attractive to such a lazy flake.
100
failuresuccedslike.bsky.social @failuresuccedslike.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
Polanski should have waited and stood in Wes Streeting's constituency. Streeting's got no majority, has the worst cabinet post a Labour politician can have, and he's Wes Streeting.

Burnham will lose if he tries to Gordon Brown it. People won't be scared enough to vote tactically against Reform, he'll have three years of contradiction and equivocation behind him, and Badenoch will have convinced a lot of gullible people of her competence &/or humanity.

She's spiteful enough to keep real Tories happy, polished enough to sway some gullible right-leaning "centrists", and is being advised by people shrewd enough to take advantage of weaknesses and inconsistencies that will become apparent within Burnham and when he is confronted by "events".

Starmer got into parliament to be Prime Minister Ed Miliband's attorney general, and stayed to keep the Labour Party alive. Burnham got out of parliament to keep his career alive.
