with all the controversy about cl-lib.el in emacs, i actually think we need an el-lib.lisp

For clients Thunderbird is probably your best bet. It looks like threaded e-mail, your client will ask you how many messages you want to download out of the entire history. I've never tried posting with it, I'm not sure it works anymore, I send email as usual to the list and use Gmane as the archive
