(I'm not on Instagram) But it has come to my attention that a public statement and apology was recently made after the below review of Adventitious Magazine's first issue. @adventitiouswords.bsky.social, it would be my great pleasure to formally accept your apology on behalf of us all 😆
Screengrab from Adventitious' Instagram about a much needed apology regarding the amazing short story by P. A. Cornell entitled "The Soundtrack of My Afterlife"Text reads: It has come to my attention that, in a recent review of the first issue of the magazine featured in Interstellar Flight Magazine, Nicole Field refers to Red's situation as "rein-car-nation."Text reads: I should have made that pun.

I never did. In 7 months since the release of the story, I never even thought of it.

For that, I am so, so sorry.

In a vampire normative future, where governments control and restrict gender affirming medicines, becoming one of the changeless undead seems a pretty good option. The narrative looks a lot at freedom and asks what that looks like in a world where corporations and governments fight over power.

I also want to shout out to @redscribe.bsky.social, whose truly amazing Australia based, debut novella, Grief Eater, earned a mention in the same article! @interstellarflight.bsky.social
Text reads: Protagonists don’t always need to be alive. Emma Osborne’s Grief Eater begins with the novel’s protagonist rising from the grave and making her way across Australia on a quest for revenge. The fact that writers like K Tidbeck and Cadwell Turnbull have had glowing things to say makes this particular story even more enticing. (Interstellar Flight Press; June 1, 2026)

Delighted to highlight this section of the below @reactorsff.bsky.social article with the two @starsandsabers.bsky.social anthologies I just happen to be in 🥰 Omniboz is out now. Of Dread, Decay, and Doom in June!
Text from Reactor.com article reads: Jendia Gammon is among the editors for an intriguing pair of anthologies due out in the coming months. Omniboz: Tales From the Land of Oz (edited with Ernie Chiara) includes stories from the likes of Vincent V. Cava and Adrian Tchaikovsky, who opted to revisit the fictional world of L. Frank Baum. Of Dread, Decay, and Doom: a Horror Anthology (edited with Gareth L. Powell and Scarlett R. Algee) heads into grimmer territory, with contributions from a lineup including P.A. Cornell, David Quantick, and Eden Royce. (Stars and Sabers; May 15, 2026 and June 15, 2026)

Today, in reasons why I believe someone should option my feminist retelling of #Helen🏺 (now #TroyandSparta) 😅
Text Reads: Yet it seems to me as though absolving one female character of villainy by replacing her with another seems a bit of a cheap, unsatisfactory trick. I’ve seen the same one pulled in the recent abundance of “feminist” retellings of Greek women in myth, all willing to throw Helen of Troy under the bus. All that inspired me to do was write my own feminist retelling of Helen, where even Aphrodite’s actions are rendered understandable.
I argue here even villainesses are more interesting when they are understandable.

In 2018, @foxbones.bsky.social surprised me with a gift of a book called Becoming Dangerous. Within its pages was an essay by J. A. Micheline that I think about often, and have done across the eight years since. (This is the power of the written word.)
Opening page of the essay Ritualising My Humanity by J. A. MichelineHighlighted text reads: And so I look on with some mix of confusion and resentment seeing women—very rarely black—claiming monstrosity, declaring their dreadfulness, and wishing that men would see them as harpies, sirens, demons, and other such world destroyers.

I will never not appreciate the nuance of a character arc that begins from this place, then changes as Frodo gradually goes on to discover what it is to be a bearer of the One Ring.

Nor are fairy characters themselves a metaphor or situation through which MCs progress. This generation of fairy stories aren't set between the Victorian era and 1975. Whilst making use of old and familiar folklore, they signal a breaking of new ground at the beginning of the 21st century.
Text reads: John Usglass – the almighty 12th century magician known as the Raven King – is held to have possessed three kingdoms: one in England, one in Faerie (the name of which is not given) and “a strange country on the far side of Hell” sometimes called the Bitter Lands. Indeed, relations between Faerie and Hell are well established, not least in Scottish folk tradition where “the teind” (tithe) must be paid by the former to the latter every seven years. Mortals who have strayed into the Other Lands are sometimes taken as payment as hinted at in the 16th century ballad of Tam Lin and the 15th century romance of Thomas the Rhymer
