I think the lack of cut-outs every time I go over a speed bump! Especially when I’ve got groceries or anything (or anyone!) fragile with me…I experience it as just another “we don’t care about you” from our city planners =\

I think shirk was “yes-and-ing” you, rather than disagreeing~ Saying that this scale of car use contributes to more harm than just crashes

A few posts back, Ryan shared someone’s experience having a downtown park effectively close at 7pm because (Downtown Seattle Association?) staff had to pack up the park seating and leave at that time

We’re definitely (depressingly, infuriatingly, unnecessarily) behind, but the transition to renewables is inevitable. Good work is happening at state and local levels, and that progress will continue to have a cascading effect. We’re late, but we’ll get there!

Next time there’s an event like this, a bunch of us who don’t fit that description should attend with name tags that say “No one, apparently”

Right? There’s so much space for little (and less little) bright spots like this nearby!!

Secured bike storage is such a game/changer~ I knew that was the case but the Northgate BikeLink room being out of commission has thrown that into stark relief for me, it’s been such a bummer!

Why does it strike you as almost impossible? (I honestly have no idea!)

I don’t think they literally want a fraction of citations:infractions, they’re just getting at how, especially if you walk/bike around the city, you see this happening all the time, and are being menaced by the behaviour with some regularity. *Consistent* enforcement could curtail this dramatically

I think what they’re getting at is that in Seattle, in general, people can pretty much YOLO around the city in their car breaking traffic laws left and right and they’re *very* unlikely to be apprehended in any way. It’s rightfully exasperating because it’s both so dangerous and so unnecessary.

People are always so shocked to learn/see this! Rolling up with my rain coat and the kid is back there reading a book no problem (Also I will spare you further favs/replies as I read some of your older posts, I’m just excited to see another local bike parent on here!)

Feels like a design downstream of the assumption that bikes are for recreation rather than transportation

This reminds me of an issue I’ve been pondering lately - being “trapped” in the concrete-lined bike lane - once I’m in there, I often have no choice but to stay there for a loooong stretch, passing intersecting streets and then needing to wind my way back in odd ways

Oof yeah - how old are you and where did you go to school? In my “good” midwestern suburban-rural border public schools in the 90s-00s, we didn’t learn any of that. Didn’t learn sex ed or history after 1920s either 🙃

A lot of people are! Local/state action is usually the fastest route to change in these cases~ I understand what you mean, though, that it feels like the US should’ve been doing this for a long time already D:

It’s so bad!! Reading/listening to podcasts about manoeuvring around cognitive dissonance has helped me maintain more sanity (and stop doing some unhelpful stuff). And learning to talk to said people with Socratic questioning (and the patience & affect I’d use with a grumpy kindergartener…)

It’s also like…incredibly obvious if you bother to think about it for 5 seconds? Even a live attenuated vaccine (which the covid ones aren’t anyway) has such a smaller impact on your body compared to a full-blown infection, much less repeated infections…It’s just mind-boggling to me

Anyway, that’s all I was getting at! & obviously abuse is bad, that should go without saying. Idk re: Paul but John had a sad childhood, & I can’t imagine what it’s like to be F’ed up+trying to heal, all in the then-new mass public eye. None of which excuses abuse, ever, just complicates the picture

Cont. in the “I was myself a teenaged girl” vein - Don’t Stand So Close to Me doesn’t feel like it’s saying “yay creepy older guy”, it feels like it’s taking a common experience (inappropriate attraction) & playing out a cautionary tale, maybe even imagined rather than real. That’s compelling to me!

fadedcolour.bsky.social @fadedcolour.bsky.social · 14/12/2025
And also, like, life & feelings are complex and shades of grey. Like When I Saw Her Standing There - I’ve been a 17 year old girl, & know what it’s like to flirt with a slightly older guy (both when it’s fun/aboveboard, and when it feels creepy). That song feels (to me! my opinion!) like the former

For a lot of art, especially music, I think it’s worth interacting and analysing at different levels - the author’s stated intent, listener interpretation of that intent, listener’s independent interpretation(s), how it feels to listen to, the culture around it, all sorts of things like that.

Sure! I think actually we are mostly pretty aligned - I also skip and am repulsed by a lot of their (and other similar older) songs, like Run for your Life where it’s straightforwardly gross, not a complex narrative with multiple potential readings, etc

No wonder you were like “wtf” and I was also like “wtf” LOLLL we were literally having two different conversations! Sorry, it’s like I walked in and only heard the beginning of what you said and didn’t know you & others had continued in a particular direction~

Ah! This is a “Bluesky creates many mini-threads & doesn’t display them all in full” issue - I responded to the two things I saw, where you mentioned I Saw Her Standing There and Don’t Stand So Close to Me. I have no idea about whatever thread you’re talking about, because I don’t see them

You’re referring to things you & I haven’t been talking about (i.e. that it’s complicated & personal to ponder the meaning, context, & authorship of art). I don’t appreciate the bad faith “question” that ascribes opinions I’d never hold. If you’re not interested in a real convo, let’s end here.

I get what you’re saying, & of course all of this is personal preference~ I do think oftentimes artists have a more complex/self-aware take than a face value autobio lyric read would suggest. And John Lennon was, um, complicated but learned/grew a lot since flirting and misdirecting anger at 23, yk?

I wish I could circle-bold-underline-highlight this!! Maybe there’s hope - I used to write them at regular intervals about changing the barely intelligible “stay behind the yellow textured strip” announcement to “stay behind the yellow line”. It took years 🥴 but they changed it! Time to email again…

Ughhhh that is so frustrating. There’s no need to invent fake info here! And we can/should/need to do trees AND housing! Thanks again for this additional context~

No, I’m legit not very familiar with them, so thanks for the info. Super weird that they don’t support reducing parking reqs, when the only times I’ve seen their action alerts were related to opposing tree removal for driveways!

Blows my mind it’s taken this long…nearly 2/3 of all fossil fuel energy is wasted BEFORE end use (eg production, transportation) - over $4.6 trillion per year & 40% of what we spend on energy is wasted, turned into pollution for zero benefit. It’s all right there in the stark black & white of data!

The transition to renewables is well underway! And economically it’s so clearly a better investment (alongside other factors, of course) that capex is way down for fossil fuels and hedge funds are starting to divest. The US may be slowing down for now, but the world is moving along

For some reason learning here that there are “funny” subheads increased my rage exponentially. *People died* because of this fucking negligent mess, and it sounds like it’s a miracle more didn’t. These people were being coerced into danger for no reason, over and over. I’m disgusted by this author.

I know not all art centres feelings, but I think that disconnect/discomfort is a major factor. Engaging with art makes a lot of people feel self-conscious, uncomfortable, or confused, so the default mode is to not really even engage and just make drive-by jokes
120 0
fadedcolour.bsky.social @fadedcolour.bsky.social · 30/04/2025
I think it’s related to people never having learned (formally / informally) how to engage with art, esp accessing feelings in relation to it. I sure didn’t, & I’m very in touch with my feelings & still feel at a loss sometimes when taking in art. US folk in particular are hardened/use humour to cope

Not that this is the most important bit, but the podcast is also incredibly insulting to the vast majority of research/science professionals who are compassionate, rigorous, hardworking, curious, and open - you’d never know it by the straw man picture of science/researchers this podcast represents.

Sorry, I’m still mad about the Telepathy Tapes. Similar to “AI” (they’re LLMs, y’all) outputs, if you don’t know much about the subject matter or how things work, the podcast sounds reasonable. If you actually know how any of it works, it’s clearly full of confidently biased and flawed reasoning.
