Please read my post about a family friend-he and my wife,Debbie, did not receive the care they deserved-both with VERY different consequences-he being incarcerated for murder, she with her deeply emotional memoir as a way to heal. hashtag#mentalhealthawareness hashtag#psychiatry hashtag#memoirs

He suffered for over 40 years in the institution and was not allowed visitors as their presence was too"upsetting" for him. The last time my grandmother saw him was the day he was taken away-she was 11. hashtag#mentalhealthawareness hashtag#psychiatry hashtag#memoirs

Another reason why mental health awareness and this book is so important to me.....This photo taken in London in 1919, is of my great grandfather, Arthur Edward Ruskin. Suffering from PTSD after the First World War, he had a nervous breakdown and was committed to an asylum, never to be released.

An Excerpt from 'The Factory of Maladies' by Debbie Hartung
"The Factory of Maladies,” a memoir by Debbie Hartung, is a gripping account of being locked up in a San Francisco psychiatric ward.

The conditions, treatment and care given was exactly the same-ie inadequate, uncaring and without compassion. Treated like a criminal with shame and guilt at their most vulnerable. Changes NEED to be made or else this will remain and the suffering will continue. Apologies for the long post!

Cue to today....he is currently in jail in Indonesia for killing his father in law after another schizophrenic episode. Restrained and without medication. Debbie, the author of the book, was put in the exact same psych ward as him (about 12 years after).

I visited him and was heartbroken, not just to see him suffering, but with the state of the run down facility and lack of care and compassion. He was released without any follow up action from the medical "experts". Even after a couple more scary episodes, he was never given the help he needed.

This photo is of a family friend, who was in my daughters class in elementary school. A fun, loving, generous, respectful, sweet boy. Around the age of 20,he started to show signs of schizophrenia and was placed in a San Francisco Psych Ward.

My goal is to raise awareness to the horrible conditions of Psych Wards where patients are treated without the care, compassion and treatment they deserve. They need respect and extra compassion as they are at their most vulnerable. thefactoryofmaladies.com #mentalhealth #suicideprevention #memoir
