Looking further into it they were being cheap. They thought they could just use their SA medical aid and get the care that way. Most likely they saw how much a simple GP checkup was ~150 per person (not including meds or extra treatment). It also screams of an excuse just to go back and visit….

I don’t see what’s odd. US healthcare really is that expensive. A simple procedure could cost 10k. Return economy flights and the same procedure could easily cost half that. Visa law clearly states that you CANNOT return to your exiled country once you have refugee status.

And that’s fine! But our lawmakers and regulators should have a better idea than regular people. They don’t, and that’s a problem. Even in corporate leadership - the supposed smart people in the room - see it as a magic box grants wishes. And that has made pulling the wool over eyes very easy.

The problem is that very few people actually understand AI and how it works. People are just trying to come at it with vibes. For example tackling the dangers of AI is different from tackling the dangers of data centers. They are related but different problems.

What this points to is that these models are fundamentally the same. The closed models are making improvements at the edges but LLMs have essentially platued performance wise due to the constraints of the architecture. This is not good news for closed-weight models, but good news for everyone else.

I’m so tired of these labels. One size doesn’t fit all, and neither do labels. I feel a much better metric is: 1) Is he doing shit that helps ordinary NYCrs? Check. 2) Do said voters like what he’s doing? Check 3) Is he perfect? No, but who is? Progress doesn’t happen all at once.

The breathless AGI/singularity hype really needs to be separated from the actual harm these models can do in the wrong hands. The models are capable, especially when it comes to cyber but user intent and typical probabilistic LLM behavior can lead to bad outcome.

My job deals with numbers that require a high degree of accuracy. You can build an AI model that works with them reliably. However, to do that you need a custom build with a lot of dev time and testing rigor. Most companies think an off the shelf model will work fine. That is false, and dangerous
