Best games of 2026 so far? Finally a youtube video talking about 'Laney, this won't make you happier'!!

Never sheen that shit before, wtf is happening. Started Foretales a few days ago, everything was fine. Now it's unplayable because it freezes as soon as I move the mouse (but not if I move it veeeery slowly) I'm sure it's not the game, but Hitman is fine and a reboot didn't help. Might be the EGS??

I think the worst part about that blogpost is how they admit they're only being transparent because people would have found out otherwise. "I wish I could lie to you" basically. There's just no way AI isn't melting people's brain, no one with neurons that can connect on their own would act that way.
Of course, the thing about having to publish your source code is that people might look at it. And when they do, I think it is quite evident that it is a LLM-generated project[1]. And when I thought about that, I thought that there would be a high chance that people would yell at me online. So as far as I see it I had three options here:

don't release the project (but I think it's good and I think people will enjoy using it)
hope people won't notice I used an LLM (but I think that's unlikely, and then I'll still end up getting yelled at)
write a big blog post about it, and probably get yelled at when I publish the blog post. But at least I'll get yelled at on my own terms (this is the one I chose)

(I think they were thinking about making the "best" game possible for the time, just like they are now. They're not the ones to blame imo, they've just been doing what people are demanding and accepting. Holding off on posting screenshot for MGS Delta, SH2R or Demon's Souls Remake, but you know.)

The SSR in question. There are so many places with small ponds like that that keep basically flashing. It's especially bad because if it's in a part of the screen the bright default reflection makes it look like a point of interest. It's incredibly stupid that this has become the default in games.
A small body of water reflecting the wall in its top half, then defaulting to a bright "sky" reflection in its bottom half. A pillar is in the foreground, and this creates a bright reflection halo in the water "surrounding" it in the background.

Dungeons of Hinterberg - Episode Renaud (1.5h) Free standalone story that I'm adding here because imo it solves a bunch of issues. Only 7 mini dungeons with some narrative in between, but no dumb RPG systems or whatever, just pure ideas focusing on unexplored gimmicks. Still too much combat though.
Front view of a car, a scientist is driving, Renaud (player character) is in the passenger seat, his huge sword on his back, with the hilt being so long it has to go through the window.

I hate (disrespect) this dude so much. His video on RDR2 was peak not meeting a game halfway, yet it established the discourse. THEN he comes back years later: "turns out it you try to accept what it's doing, it's good!" Speaking of which, my masterpiece from a few days ago (translation in alt):
"non mais clairement à l'époque la vidéo de nakeyjakey a niqué jiqué la manière dont les gens parlaient du jeu"

"clearly at the time nakeyjakey's video fucked* the way people talked about the game"

*niqué (fucked) is close to nakey, jiqué doesn't mean anything but it sounds funny.

Reminder that social media is social media. You don't need to lie to express negative feelings about people you disagree with, but what would be the fun in that, I guess.
Here’s the statement in full:

I have been trying to find something meaningful to say about the Id Software layoffs.
My “Microsoft will probably be a good steward of the brand” statement isn’t aging well, and this is certainly going to dampen the mood of the founder reunion at QuakeCon next month.
I’m saddened, but I can’t muster anger or outrage over it. I don’t have access to the books, but I suspect that id Software was a marginal business from Microsoft’s perspective. I believe the reports that Minecraft revenues have been carrying several other studios.
To continue being produced long term, games need to succeed, not just be beloved.
Games are competing with every other option for spending your leisure time and money, and the competition is brutal.
You can’t rule out the possibility that executives are idiots, but that shouldn’t be your default belief. I don’t think there is any obvious path that would have doubled the revenue from Id games.
Could they have gotten more with a different pricing strategy?
Could they have created more things for fans to buy?
Could they have cost effectively marketed in a way that reached more players that would have loved and bought the games?
Could they have changed the game designs and broadened the appeal to more players without alienating existing ones?
Could they have produced the games at a lower cost, faster or cheaper?
I really don’t know.
The game isn’t over yet, and I hope the studio rallies through.

Sure Vivaldi staff, joke about not switching browser when doing what they're supposed to be made for becomes impossible. I fucking hate tech so much holy shit.
First of all, please remember that this is just a heads-up message. You can still re-enable uBlock Origin (and other Manifest v2 extensions) in vivaldi:extensions (Menu > Tools > Extensions), and it should continue to work at least until the end of the Vivaldi 8.1 release cycle (give or take 2 months). It should give you enough time to backup/export your settings and data from the unsupported extensions and find alternatives (hopefully other extensions, and not the browser 😜).

That being said there's a reviewer that basically says "I recommend it but I don't like match 3 nor card games" which is already pretty weird, but also this, and I just can't. Same complaints some people had of Blue Prince and ffs, knowing the square piece goes in the square hole isn't the point!
I don't think Titanium Court wastes my time—I've chosen to play it—but I was too often annoyed that my best-laid plans, my canny strategising, was flippantly undermined by a randomness the gameplay systems are too cumbersome to counteract. *Too often I knew how to solve a problem but the problem could not be match-three'd away, and there's a harsh limit to how much forward-planning can be done to accommodate for unfavourable RNG.* So maybe this is secretly just a card game? (If so, that's me bamboozled: I don't like them either.)

Great timing on that Michael Brough post mightyvision.blogspot.com/2026/06/advi...
Instead of "this big-budget game sucks"
try writing about an indie game instead

If you don’t like a thing, don’t waste energy talking about it.

You convinced yourself you need to "be part of the conversation" but you're just adding noise. Nobody cares. Stop chasing clicks. If you'd instead written something positive about something you liked that the reader hadn’t heard of and might like too, in a small way you’d have made the world a better place.

Sometimes just one mention is enough. Surely if you have an audience you could continually improve people's lives. Even one person listening is worth it compared to constantly writing about industry BS and blockbusters, that only makes you appear serious. Few recent examples 🥰

Saw someone recommend this in response to Plante’s ‘Earliest Game of the Year’ podcast stunt, which we took part in. It’s an explicitly Droqen-inspired weird platformer, same vein as Derelict Star I guess, meaning it’s a skill game where you get your upgrades in your own brainia. Seems interesting but only got to a handful of checkpoints before I got stumped for the day. I’m in vacation mode so this might be too hard for now.

(btw, very generous of Bennett to describe it as "recommending" :D)Some people talking on discord about The Message From Deep Space (which might not be in direct response to my mention, but since no one talked about it and it's pretty obscure, I'll take some credit)

From me, quoted: Randomly mentioning two demos that are really cool and haven't really seen people mention [...]

person 1: +1 message from deep space good
now I have to wait a week though :(

person 2: Make that +2! Such a fascinating idea and the fact that you eventually learn more concrete words than mathematics is so intriguing.
Honestly, rule discovery mathematics has so much unseen potential

person 3: Agreed, I enjoyed that demo last night, had some good rules

idk, it's very interesting that in the Order of the *Sinking Star* logo, the star is full; while in The Witness the logo you find on a bunch of different items is clearly just the top half... guess it might be a prequel then 🤷
Order of the Sinking Star logo, the star made of diamonds is full in the background.Screenshot from The Witness, roof of the starting area, there are a couple of cushions, one of them is a diamond lattice, the other has half of the star made of diamonds. That symbol is also on a.. napkin? coaster?

(yes I reinstalled the game just to take a clean screenshot, I was in the marsh and had to run all the way across the island)

And that just on here 😬 BTW Mortol (and its sequel) in UFO 50 was a good example of leaving your corpse as a platform: they both needed a structural twist to make it interesting (limited lives, open design), and rituals / special abilities on top of just dying.
Discord post from April 2024:

Okay, I feel like I'm going crazy 😅 You've probably seen this around as it's got a big positive reception because of the wow factor, but.. do you see any potential in this idea?
To me it's like that plarformer everyone tried to make once where dying on spikes leave a body you can then jump on. Seems like a cool idea but then you realise there's not much you can do with it, or at least making interesting stuff with this isn't as obvious as it'd seem.

With the amount of attention they got they're probably going to stick with it, but I wonder if they'll find something of interest in there that's more than a 5min demo.

I've been hating on this game for a while 😂 But I still wanted to try the demo just to be sure, and it's way worse than I expected 🙈 Also, really not a good look for the showcases that featured it, especially the ones that are supposed to be curated (no wonder there's a *discovery problem*...)
Posts from 8 days ago:
Let's see if Screenbound has figured any of their gameplay yet...
Okay so they gave up on platforming right away. At least if they realised it had no potential it's reassuring.Post from 7 months ago:

I randomly got Fez, another one I put in loved and... it instantly decided "oh you like perspective shifts? here's Screenbound, a unreleased and completely unproven game someone on this app somehow recommended" 😭Posts from 8 months ago:
I still have to try it, but this page that's showing what games have basically the most backlogs is pretty much confirming my assumptions www.ludocene.com/most-wanted

This looks like a "I haven't looked at video games in 15 years, what should I play?"
(also, Screenbound?! someone needs to be fired)

Not to say Screenbound can't be good but it has shown nothing that makes me think there's a worthy idea there, and I wouldn't trust a curator that recommends an *unreleased* game based on that.
Anyways, really curious to know how this here solved the fabled discovery problem."awards" showcased on the game's steam page:

Realising I got blocked for this, and *come on* (the quoted post was the one I quoted) Even if we should be mad about all of it, it's still weird how Annapurna is always the example. But I think my point still stands, why should we be mad about rich assholes funding art (esp. not propaganda)?
original post:
"while people are talking about ZA/UM being taken over by capital interests, its always interesting to bring up how the distribution rights for Kentucky Route Zero are also owned by the Larry Ellison fortune, since Larry Ellison's daughter Megan Ellison bankrolls the entirety of Annapurna."

response/quote by the same author:
"i think some people saw my post yesterday and thought i was saying 'why aren't you getting mad about this other thing hypocrite?' when i was trying to say 'this is emblematic of a larger issue and you should be mad about all of it'".

Maybe big names studios shouldn't stretch their resources so much that they have to sell a million units to survive. Maybe big names driving prices down to be no-brainers makes it an issue for everyone else. Because of that stuff, I honestly believe this vibe-based graph is true:
A graph titled "How hard it is to get people to play your game".
It shows the thought put into getting the game depending on the price. I argue that the most "no-brainer" prices are 5 and 70 (€/$, lower than for free games) and that 30 is the prices people think the most about. I'd call it the "oh this is cool, I'll get it on sale maybe" tier.
100 goes into the negative, as a joke about GTA 6 costing 100€.

All of this assumes the game is viewed as "real" (so, it's good enough and people have heard about it).

The way they about the AI disclosure for that magic librarian game is pure insanity. Now we're looking at how the use of gen AI is reflected in gameplay to say it's okay to use it if we like the games I guess. aftermath.site/librarian-ti...
This gave me a lot of pause and put me off the game for a while. I thought about the disclosure as I played with my powers: There’s a way in which I could read my use of them as a certain kind of metaphor for AI, removing the person-power and thinking from a task but also making it far more efficient than it would be unaided. There’s certainly a middle ground here, using your powers to assist you in the manual task instead of deploying them to circumvent it altogether, as the disclosure seems to suggest the developers did with their use of AI. I doubt the developers intended this reading, but it did give me something to mull over. Ultimately I was curious enough about the game, given how well it slots into my interests (and the master’s degree I’m still paying for) and satisfied enough with the disclosure to play it anyway, but I wouldn’t fault anyone who wants nothing to do with a game that uses AI in any way.

I love WoA as much as anyone who can ignore microtransactions, always online, and FOMO systems, but there's also a reason why, when you see someone playing it, half of the gameplay looks like this:

Funny how everything Patrick Willems says in next month's video is also relevant to the majority of the top 100 games on metacritic. The very sad part is that none of those movies would get anywhere close to this.

God, I miss disliking roguelikes because I just didn't enjoy the game (gungeon always felt like the worst runs of isaac to me 😔), instead of hating them for their fundamental lack of any sense of ethics. www.polygon.com/enter-the-gu...
“What is a roguelike anymore?” he asked. “So few people are trying to make something that is truly evocative of this experience of playing Rogue. Yesterday, a new Devolver game called Minos came out. You design a dungeon and then adventurers come in and they get attacked. I was on the Steam page and I watched a dev explanation of the game and he said (paraphrasing), ‘But don't worry, this is a roguelike, so death is not the end!’ And I'm like, that is the exact opposite of what 10 years ago somebody would've said a roguelike was!”“The most obvious thing that I see is a screen that pops up three choices every 45 seconds. That's changed,” he said. “There was a time where the thought of being interrupted in the game and anything even remotely fast-paced would be seen as anathema to game design. The whole game, the way the power curve is designed is like you have to be interrupted by this serotonin blast of fanfare and three choices… It’s more relatable to a slot machine being popular.”

Definitely not a good way to get like 40 reviews for your game though
Reviews for a game from 2019. It had one review from 2019 and one from 2021. It has, so far, 36 reviews posted today.

Independent games journalism is where it's at! No more pressure from higher ups, no more compromises for access!!

SMB 3D is so weird, I'd love to know how things were playtested. Tons of small geometry and hitbox issues, but the weirdest part is the difficulty curve and balancing. Some levels you struggle to get a second below A+ time, and here I'm getting almost 10 seconds under without doing anything special.
Screenshot of a Super Meat Boy 3D time result screen. My time is 16:65, and the "A+" time to beat is 25:00.

Reading "Sluggerfly and Team Meat smartly added a new air dash ability to Meat Boy’s limited repertoire of techniques" from IGN's review makes me feel insane. This is such a fundamentally different way to look at games that it's no wonder I generally don't agree at all with reviews.
Sluggerfly and Team Meat smartly added a new air dash ability to Meat Boy’s limited repertoire of techniques that allows him to instantly halt his momentum and dash in a direction, which is great because it’s much harder to judge distance in 3D than it is in 2D, and having the ability to instantly correct yourself if you overshot a jump, or quickly latch on to a wall after leaping around a corner is a godsend. Not to mention it makes for great high risk movement tech since you can do a short hop into an airdash for a quick boost of speed that’s faster than just straight up running, which is especially fun when trying to find ways to shave off an extra second or two of your fastest times while going for A+ ranks.
