I consider these people to be deeply unserious engagement farmers and nothing more

it is 2026. it is HIGH TIME for chemdraw (all versions) to understand Bpin natively. it is preposterous that it does not. #ChemSky

this also means that there are probably PhD students making more than the PDFs they work alongside

now there is a marked disparity within laboratories where some students receive literally twice as much funding $ as others (AND don't have to teach!)

my hope is that the NSERC funding causes universities broadly to look at PhD and postdoc funding. the days of living easily on $20,000 per year in most cities in this country are long gone

science in canada is in a weird spot - this PDF posting pays less after tax than an NSERC PGS D student makes (unless you start ≥$50k). not picking on anyone, just making an observation take home on $48,000 in ON: $38,799 NSERC PGS D: $40,000 (tax free)

It continues. The similarity in the structure of these emails is striking. For what it’s worth…. applicants, I want to hear from YOU. What are YOUR interests? What’s YOUR motivation? I don’t care what some robot thinks I want to hear. Be brave. Be yourself.

plausible sequence of events is that the student was working with some kind of mercury-containing reaction that could hypothetically generate dimethyl mercury, spilled some on self, and presented to ER as a precaution

OK #chemsky folks, this just keeps getting more bizarre source: emergency.mit.net
Offices across campus have been responding to a reported hazardous material incident involving a single individual in a chemistry laboratory. The Institute became aware of the matter after the individual, a graduate student, self-reported to a local emergency room and claimed to have synthesized dimethyl mercury, a compound that is not authorized as part of their research program. Emerging information calls into question whether this compound was in fact synthesized. We are also able to disclose, with the student’s permission, that while the student remains under medical supervision, their initial blood test result, which was received today, shows no sign of exposure to mercury.

some positive #ChemSky news is that today i finally made a compound that i've been trying to access in some form or another for over a year, and in so doing have unlocked a project i've wanted to get going for very nearly as long

tragic news from Hokkaido university this morning: a graduate student has died due to a hydrofluoric acid exposure. two others suffered minor injuries trying to give aid a sobering reminder that lab work in this discipline is so very dangerous at times. my heart goes out to those affected #ChemSky

thread of poetry & art about cats, which I will periodically add to. here is the first entry, an old favourite!
the photo contains a complete transcription of a poem entitled "From the Point of View of a Cat" which can be found online if you would like to read in full. It begins:

This is my Man. I am not afraid of him. He is very strong, for he eats a great deal; he is an Eater of All Things. What are you eating? Give me some! He is not beautiful, for he has no fur.

as a student in this situation, it's nice to see someone talking about it. I will defend my PhD without ever having set foot at an ACS meeting or a GRC. I have to decline a recent travel award because I can't safely travel to my host institution. Not even sure why I'm doing this anymore 🤷‍♀️

anyone on #ChemSky have a recommendation for a good glass-backed TLC plate for a lab trying to switch from Supelco (the old Merck gold standard)? we have used the 1057150001 plates for years but the cost is just going up and up
