ASPI's Director of South Asia Initiatives, @faamer.bsky.social, comments on President Donald #Trump and Indian Prime Minister Narendra #Modi's bilateral meeting in Washington D.C.
White text on blue background that reads: “Despite friction over reciprocal tariffs and Trump’s renewed criticism of BRICS, overall, the two leaders projected a strong rapport. Trump declared that U.S.-India relations were at their best currently and both leaders showed a conviction toward taking the relationship forward. Trump’s strong endorsement of the Quad framework reaffirmed India’s critical role in regional security.” by Farwa Aamer, Director of South Asia InitiativesWhite text on blue background that reads: “For India, this visit yielded strategic wins, substantive meetings, and tangible outcomes. The good rapport between the two leaders seems to have served both parties well. If leveraged effectively, these developments can significantly bolster U.S.-India ties. However, the relationship remains layered and dynamic, with the coming months proving critical in translating commitments into concrete action.” by Farwa Aamer, Director of South Asia Initiatives

Commentary by Vice President Daniel Russel and Director of South Aasia Initiatives @faamer.bsky.social.
White and yellow text on blue background that reads:

On Trump and Pete Hegseth describing North Korea as “a nuclear power.”

“It is both sloppy and unwise for a U.S. official to publicly describe North Korea as ‘a nuclear power.’ It blurs the line between legitimate nuclear states and outlaw regimes that illicitly acquired nukes in violation of international law. North Korea has had nuclear weapons for nearly two decades, but the world has not and should not accord it even implied legitimacy.”

From Daniel Russel, Vice President, International Security and Diplomacy.White and yellow text on blue background that reads:

On Trump suspending foreign assistance for 90-day review

“Reviewing U.S. foreign assistance to ensure alignment with national interests and administration priorities makes sense; suspending all aid programs for 3 months while a review begins does not. A preemptive suspension is harmful because of the unnecessary disruption to ongoing programs, the suffering it will cause to communities in the developing world, and the unnecessary damage it will do to America’s image. The presumption that U.S. foreign assistance programs are not serving U.S. interests unless proved otherwise is backwards - far better to start with a careful review of the rationale and the impact of ongoing programs.”

From Daniel Russel, Vice President, International Security and Diplomacy.White text on blue background that reads:

“Early executive orders issued by the Trump administration signal a pivot toward a foreign policy that could place greater responsibility on regional players to align with U.S. priorities. India has already shown a willingness to collaborate, particularly on immigration issues, by proposing measures to identify and repatriate Indian nationals residing illegally in the U.S. This pragmatic approach reflects India’s effort to balance its strategic interests while meeting U.S. interests. But the trade, tariffs, and BRICS issue could be potential sticking points needing a lot more careful navigation”

From Farwa Aamer, Director of South Asia Initiatives.
