for everyone asking about this, its in a steam frame discord server! discord.gg/steamframe @meres01.bsky.social @spineblade.bsky.social @galethewusky.bsky.social

This thread and message will be a compilation of all the common advice to optimize streaming quality for Steam Frame. This message will continue to be updated with any other advice I find that can help. Any additions I can't squeeze into here I'll begin with "EDIT:" in this thread as I don't have Nitro and all of these messages are already around 2000 characters 😭 so make sure to use Discord search to find those edits!

First and most important: ENTER THE STEAMVR AND STEAM FRAME BETA UPDATE CHANNEL! It has and will soon have many important fixes and changes that will greatly improve your experience!
Second thing: IF YOUR DONGLE ISN'T CONNECTING DISABLE YOUR ANTIVIRUS AND VPN AND KILL THE PROCESSES IN TASK MANAGER! Currently they seem to aggressively block the dongle from connecting to Steam Frame!

Almost ALL settings will be in either what's called the REMOTE or LOCAL SteamVR VR settings menu! Remote means the VR settings panel when you're connected to a remote SteamVR session! Local is the VR Settings panel in the steam frame itself! That will ALWAYS be the leftmost steam menu button in the taskbar! I'll upload screenshots of where you can access these menus below. Some of them can be pretty hidden, so I'll do my best to describe them.
If the steps in this guide don't help enough or you still have issues, please enable the Debug Graph in the REMOTE VR Settings -> Steam Link -> Show Debug Graph. It'll open up a very complicated display on your desktop. Maximize the window to fit the screen, and then send a screenshot in this chat.
Various other tips listed below, sorted by how much it'll (hopefully) improve sharpness and/or stability, and categorized by REMOTE or LOCAL, with a third section for dongle setup:

REMOTE SETTINGS
Increase your SteamVR resolution to 226% in VR Settings -> Video. ONLY IF YOU'RE COMING FROM QUEST 3 + VD + GODLIKE QUALITY! Adjust to 175% or 150% if this is your first headset or are upgrading from an older one! This helps because Steam Frame doesn't properly communicate a barrel distortion-corrected resolution to remote SteamVR, so anything lower than this will likely be terribly blurry and may have noticable warping. This resolution is equivalent to 140% supersampling in apps such as Virtual Desktop aka "God" quality on the Quest 3
Disable Allow Multiple Links in VR Settings -> Steam Link. This should be less needed in the newest betas, but multi-link will cause more issues than not if one of the connections are extremely weak or unstable.
Disable Advanced Supersample Filtering in VR Settings -> Video. This is a somewhat legacy option that helps alleviate some downsampling artfacts from rendering at super high resolutions on a low resolution display like the Index. It's less needed nowadays, but it can still be useful if you have some fine artifacts with far away details. Otherwise, turn this off for more sharpness.
Change Overlay Render Quality to Low in VR Settings -> Video. The remote SteamVR can look different than local because the remote display has higher quality AA settings to my knowledge, so with direct comparisons it can seem blurrier. This doesn't have an effect on game content, but it DOES affect desktop views as well. So if you have lots of aliasing on your desktop, change this back to Medium or High
Change Target Bandwidth to Manual and raise your target bandwidth to 350 in VR Settings -> Steam Link. Self explanatory, more bandwidth, less compression. If your connection isn't stable, this makes it even less stable. Make sure you don't have frame drops before upping this.
If you notice blurring when you move your eyes and then it "catches up", change Encoded Video Size to Manual and raise it in VR Settings -> Steam Link.

LOCAL SETTINGS
Also disable Advanced Supersample Filtering in VR Settings -> Video. I have a feeling it doesn't stack between local and remote, but better be safe than sorry.
Applies to 2D content, enable Hardware Decoding and Low Latency Networking in Steam Settings -> Remote Play -> Advanced Client Options
If you want to use the dongle, make sure you're connected to a 5GHz network! If it's 6GHz, that network will take priority and the dongle will be using 5GHz which is somehow very very awful. The dongle is purely optimized for 6GHz!

ADJUSTING YOUR DONGLE
Make sure it is plugged into a USB 3.0 port with a DIRECT LINE OF SIGHT! This means plugging it into the front of your computer! NOT the back! 6Ghz does not like metal or anything in the way.
DISABLE WINDOWS USB POWER MANAGEMENT in Device Manager -> Network Adapters -> Realtek USB NIC for Valve -> Power Management -> Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power
Move the dongle away from other wireless receivers. Even though it's mainly a 6GHz device, other wireless signals can still interfere.
Make sure you're close enough to the dongle in the first place. The dongle is small, but should have plenty of range for a normal VR playspace. But if you're trying to use it across the house or in a huge garage, you may run into issues.

Once again, if all else fails, please enable Show Debug menu in the REMOTE VR Settings -> Steam Link -> Show Debug Menu. It'll open up a very complicated display on your desktop. Maximize the window to fit the screen, and then send a screenshot in this chat.
