#1stLineThursday ‘For the most wild, yet most homely narrative which I am about to pen, I neither expect nor solicit belief.’ Doesn’t this offer the perfect curiosity seed—what could we possibly be about to read and how bad is it going to get? Spoiler; it doesn’t disappoint.

#1stlinethursday ‘When I was seven, I found a door.’ Found not opened. Golly every time I read that line I get goosebumps. And even though the writer breaks the 4th wall, her capital D for Door paragraph sold me. Wonderful and a masterful portal story.

#1stlinethursday ‘The scream ripped through the frozen air, sharp as a knife.’ All you need to know about the book is in this first line. The harshness of the winter, the fear, the threat and the mystery. A creepy, atmospheric Gothic mystery that stars the Brontë family- perfect for Halloween!

#1stlinethursday ‘The studio was filled with the rich odour of roses, and when the light summer wind stirred amidst the trees of the garden, there came through the open door the heavy scent of the lilac, or the more delicate perfume of the pink-flowering thorn.’ What a masterpiece.

#1stLineThursday ‘Lost in the shadows of the shelves, I almost fall off the ladder.’ The intrigue in this line sparks my curiosity— how many shelves are there? The imagery of a cluttered bookshop is imagined. Then the comedic tone assures me this story has oodles of voice. Robin Sloan

#1stLineThursday ‘Whether I shall turn out to be the hero of my own life, or whether that station will be held by anybody else, these pages must show.’ Love this pragmatic outlook and the curiosity this induces to read on— will he be the hero? Who else could it be? #Masterclass Charles Dickens

#1stLineThursday “Deid apprentices tend to tarnish a man’s reputation after a while.” The local dialect gives this first line so much voice - as does the chapter title. The curiosity seeds are planted & the mystery & humour evoked set the tone perfectly for the rest of the book Kevin Hearne 2020

#1stLineThursday “To dwellers in a wood, almost every species of tree has its voice as well as its feature.” The imagery in this first line! I think of the different shapes & texture of leaves, the wind rustling through tall trunks and new saplings. Thomas Hardy Under the Greenwood tree
