I've been following Ellipsus with great interest as a potential tool for collaborating with authors on edits to their stories instead of using "track changes" in Word. Sounds like Ellipsus may not be quite ready for prime time, though.

While I may lean toward the experimental when deciding which submissions to accept, I won't pass up an exceptional story or poem just because it's more conventional in form. My goal is to assemble a mix of submissions that complement each other and create a strong and coherent collection.

Part of launching a new #specfic magazine is the allure of the unknown. I have a vision of what Exoplanet can be, but I can't control the #submissions we get. The stories and poems I select from that slush pile will set the tone for the magazine's future and help define what "Exoplanet story" means.

Exoplanet right now is just me, but that will change in October when I recruit some first readers. I'll see how things play out with #submissions in September and gauge how large the team should be to ensure the load is reasonable going forward. More in next week's Exoplanet Uplink newsletter.

I should mention something to avoid confusion. While I'm starting Exoplanet from scratch in 2026, there was a previous Exoplanet magazine that shut down in 2020. The domain lapsed a few years ago, so I scooped it up. It's sad when a lit mag closes, but I love the name and hope to do it justice.

Exoplanet || subs open Sept 1st @exoplanetmag.com · 23/07/2026

Thanks for the feedback. I removed the mention of using ChatGPT to write a short bio from our submission guidelines. I appreciate the well wishes! It's a bit daunting to start from scratch (and I'll make some mistakes along the way), but I think I have a solid launch plan. We'll see what happens!

110

Exoplanet || subs open Sept 1st @exoplanetmag.com · 23/07/2026

You make a good point. I was just trying to draw a clear line in the sand that the stories and poems must be human-authored. Maybe I should remove the mention of ChatGPT, as a human-authored bio would be preferable.

Exoplanet || subs open Sept 1st @exoplanetmag.com · 23/07/2026

We're not on Duotrope yet. That listing is for what I'll call the original Exoplanet magazine. As you said, they stopped in 2020. Last year I brainstormed some names, checked domains, and found this one was available. It's sad when a mag shuts down, but I love the name and am glad I could revive it.

110

Exoplanet || subs open Sept 1st @exoplanetmag.com · 23/07/2026

I should probably mention our policy toward AI. We do not accept stories written by or with AI. Using a tool like Grammarly to check your spelling, grammar, and punctuation is fine. Heck, use ChatGPT to help write your short bio if you like, but we only want to read human-authored stories and poems.

The site originally used Jekyll via GitHub Pages, so I would update the code locally and push it to GitHub to initiate a site build. That was kinda fun early on, but it never would have scaled to dozens of stories and blog posts, let alone hundreds. Now the site runs on Ghost. Much easier.

Adding a featured image to every page and post on the Exoplanet site to fix the OpenGraph tags. Right now, Ghost is displaying a generic gradient in Bluesky when I share a link. Thankfully, I have a background in web dev, so I understand how this stuff works. 🤓

I don't know either. AI-generated submissions are certainly a concern as we gear up for our first submission window in September. I agree that AI detectors are problematic and unreliable. We'll rely on our best judgment and reach out to the author when in doubt about the origin of their story.

Fascinating! Seven times larger than its own star. And making it through the red giant phase of that star must have been a good trick. I don't think a white dwarf has a habitable zone, but it does make one wonder what it would take to survive in this star system.
