Planetary Astrophysicist at the University of California, Riverside. I like Venus. A lot. Exoplanets are also kinda cool.

I absolutely love my Venus colleagues. I say that unironically.

Something I've learned: If you're talking to an NPC and the DM asks "Do you really say that?", you should probably laugh, throw up your hands, and say "Of course not! I was just joking!". 🤣

This makes me sad. I had my first sabbatical earlier this year and brought many projects to fruition, and completed others over the summer. Writing is my passion. Seeing my papers lost in the sea of AI generated work is somewhat disheartening though.

Yes, the deluge of AI generated manuscripts is a genuine issue for the journals, and that problem is likely only going to get worse. Not sure how to solve this problem.

Love this new paper regarding albedos of lava worlds. Turns out hot terrestrial planets are shiny, which is the opposite of what we've generally seen for hot giant planets. Go TESS! Go PLATO! arxiv.org/abs/2609.26874

Was there an update on timescale? One of the reasons UOP was ranked so highly by OWL was because of the relatively low technical risk and gravity assists that could have it arrive around 2040. However, that assumed using the early 2030s launch windows.

If you are asked to review a paper/proposal, and you intend to use AI to conduct the review, please do not accept the request. Peer review is a fundamental component of the scientific process. Using AI to conduct this not only insults the authors, but your own expertise.

Next, a new model shows Venus could have had a moon for nearly 2 billion years – before the planet ate it. It might be hard to prove this happened, but it could explain the disappearance of the planet's oceans. www.newscientist.com/article/2587...

I'm very excited to share my latest paper about why Venus has no moon. In almost every scenario, a hypothetical Venus moon spirals inward and is destroyed at the Roche limit. Venus' lack of moon may thus be a natural consequence of its slow spin. arxiv.org/abs/2608.25036

Turning a planet into Venus needs consideration of the whole planetary energy history. My new paper with Emma Miles discusses Venus analogs as an evolutionary energy-budget problem: tidal heating + pre-main-sequence irradiation can seal a planet's fate. arxiv.org/abs/2608.18290

IT WORKED! Thousands of you wrote your senators, and the Senate passed a funding bill pausing the OMB rule that would hand political appointees control over science grants. But it's not over: the House's bill doesn't include the pause. Tell your Rep to back the Senate's language: planet.ly/cPbNu

Don't forget to watch for Jupiter and Venus together after sunset! On June 9 they'll be very close but even now it's good. Look west after sunset. If it's clear you can't miss them lowish to the horizon. Venus is very bright.
