HM Treasury has appointed HSBC as platform provider for the pilot issuance of the Digital Gilt Instrument, bringing UK government debt onto distributed ledger infrastructure. Built on HSBC Orion and operating within the Digital Securities Sandbox run jointly by the Bank of England and the FCA, the pilot will show whether tokenisation can support the most conservative instrument in British finance. Strong customer authentication has done its job on unauthorised card fraud, moving liability away from merchants who authenticate a payment correctly. It was never built to cover the disputes now driving the bulk of chargeback volume.
