![A fanfic excerpt by beyondthesea, zine writer:
Sometimes, when the night was clear, before [Shianni's] parents locked up the house, her mother would carry her outside, just past the threshold, to look up at the sky. She doesn’t remember any of the stories she’d told her, but she does remember that she’d loved them. You have as much right to this as anyone else, her mother had repeated. The stars look down on all of us the same. Shianni can hear her saying those words when she looks up at them from the alienage, more obscured from the narrow streets by the apartments stacked on top of each other and the fort and castle in the distance, but still looking down on her just as they had in the fields of her parents’ freehold.](https://cdn.bsky.app/img/feed_thumbnail/plain/did:plc:jrjp6ii23ybatip4uaw4cehk/bafkreiba2fnjp6hkwcbf5qu52bo3vfm7c7wbyftnecooodfeb6vzz7jbcm)
