There's a lot of stuff I hate on social media, but nothing gets my goat quite like the kind of post where someone (-thing?) quotes basically everything you've written, clearly without digesting any of the content, only to proceed to express interest in what you do (generically, to scam you later).

In the process of finding this excerpt--a bit of description if the Triglav temple in Pogzen--I found out that there are plenty of walls in my story, and even more instances of people swallowing. One of those has to be reined in. #WIPSnips #writing #writingcommunity #writesky

The temple stood stark white within the citadel, cutting into the otherwise dark stone of it like a ghost. Its single tower shot out from the centre of the squat round building incongruously, as if whoever took on the task of designing the place of worship changed their mind about the shape halfway through. Where the lower level was heavy-set, each wal thick with buttresses holding it up like a group of friends helping a drunk home, the tower was all latticework over the windows and a pinnacle so sharp it could be mistaken for a giant's spindle

Among the pillars of trees—pines so high one couldn’t see the tops and birches shining dully in the semi-darkness—were flowers. They were not, however, quite like any wildflowers they’d seen on their journey. They were a creamy shade of yellow, like freshly churned butter, each petal as large as a blanket. There were only a few of them, and yet, they took up the entire clearing, linked together by a thick cord of a stem, growing out of a common root on the far edge. Up close, Zora could smell the fragrance they gave off—sickly sweet and burning in her nostrils as if she were inhaling flames.

“What are those? I’ve never seen a flower this large,” Iluaneh said, stopping Betta by one of the flowers, from which the horse recoiled in discomfort.

“It’s Sula’s bloom,” Zora said, remembering an ancient story about how the plant came to be, supposedly growing only in the depths of the Great Lakh Forest. “I’ve always thought it was a myth. It’s a story we tell about the goddesses, but you know, people get carried away sometimes.”

Iluaneh studied her for a moment, her left hand hovering a foot over the enormous petals. “You don’t believe in the stories? I thought you were—?”

“Devout?” Zora raised her eyebrows. “I am. I believe in the gods, I see signs of their existence every day, in the gifts they offer, and in how they respond to my prayers. But I know that some things— Sometimes people need some comfort or explanation the gods don’t provide, so— It’s okay to question stories. If we weren’t supposed to, why would Sula have given us minds and the capacity for thought?”

My tablet, for whatever reason that I should probably investigate, insists on autocorrecting lots of words in my writing. And sure, the names of my Slavic-inspired fantasy characters, I get. But changing "nobility" into "mobility" is just fucking funny. The guy's not well-bred, just bendy 🤷🏻‍♀️ #writing

Just saw a take from some fundie Christian pastor how women shouldn't live independently, or rather that women should serve men. It's sweet of them to constantly be admitting that they wouldn't survive without a woman feeding them, but I would rather these fundies had no right to live independently.

Reading a thriller I picked up semi-randomly at the library, and--as much as I'm invested in the story--I am losing my shit at some of the infodumps. And like, *this* is not efficient use of dialogue, and *that* is when you shouldn't be using the passive. Annoying af, but ultimately educational.

This evening, I call her, and she picks up, even though she’s obviously out with the cast and crew.

“Hey, let me go somewhere I can hear you!” she shouts into the phone over the racket of a bar.

Finally, after much shuffling, many excuse mes, and some other, unidentified noises along the way, it quietens.

“So, you listened,” I say.

“I did!” She actually sounds enthusiastic. “There’s maybe some stuff to polish still—I mean, you need a proper studio, babe—but if I gave a fuck about this Pris chick, I’d be gobbling this shit up.”

“Thanks.” I play coy, but inside I’m screaming. “I’ve really been working my ass off over this.”

“I know. And it’s one hot ass,” she purrs into my ear and even over thousands of miles and a phone connection she manages to make me wet with the sound alone.

“Where are you now?”

“Ladies’ room, why?”

“Wanna make me come from seven thousand miles away?”

And she does.

While travelling through the Great Lakh Forest, my characters encounter many strange and some less strange creatures. This is more the latter than the former, but it sure has teeth. #WIPSnips #writing #writingcommunity #writesky

The animal was large, a heap of bone and muscle, thoroughly covered by a bristle of dark fur. Each paw was the size of a human fist, except one of a particularly large specimen of human, and the claws on them left gouges in the dirt. Iluaneh couldn’t tell what it was at first—bear or wolf?—but it finally turned its hide sideways, revealing stripes, running from the top of its skull to the tail, along its spine, the colours barely distinguishable in the night.

The striped bobcat nudged the burnt-out bonfire with a claw, licking it deliberately afterwards. Iluaneh froze, imagining how much damage the long, pointed canine teeth could do to someone, or something, if this enormous, wild cat attacked them. It was half the size of a horse, which was impressive for what did look like an overgrown house pet.
